HTWD: The German EUDI wallet is called “d-you”—and HTWD is on board for the launch

October 16, 2026. In less than four months, the digital wallet (EUDI Wallet) will be made available to German citizens free of charge. It contains the national ID card, driver’s license, and other important documents, as well as proof of everyday activities. This enables simple and secure identification both online and in person. Digital documents such as tickets or loyalty cards make everyday digital life easier. On September 9, the Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and State Modernization, Dr. Karsten Wildberger, announced the name and logo of the German digital wallet at a press conference: It will be called “d-you.”

The official press conference was preceded by an internal meeting with the minister, during which representatives from various companies, government agencies, and associations—who, as “Launch Partners,” will already be providing concrete applications when the wallet launches in January 2027—

HTWD is a “Launch Partner” of the d-you Wallet. To this end, it has developed the digital student ID, which can be used, among other places, in the state capital of Dresden for discounted admission to municipal facilities such as the zoo or museums. Together with Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, HIS, and KAPRION, the campus.connect project designed and tested the issuance of digital credentials for the student lifecycle within the EUDI Wallet, and this functionality is now ready for practical use.

Background

The EUDI Wallet is one of the key digitalization projects in the European Union. It is designed to give citizens control over their digital identity and documents relevant to everyday life through a convenient smartphone app. This data can then be presented to government agencies and companies as verifiable proof of required attributes when needed for online services, both in person and on the Internet.

HTW Dresden is participating in the development of wallets and the use of digital identities and credentials through the “Digital Service Systems” working group led by Prof. Jürgen Anke. Numerous practical applications involving many partners, such as the cities of Dresden and Leipzig, have been developed and tested since 2021. In addition, HTWD has hosted the annual “authenticon” conference since 2023, where representatives from academia, business, government, and politics exchange ideas on solutions for a trustworthy Internet.
