In the past few weeks, there has been a lot of discussion about which professions could possibly be replaced by ChatGPT. Personally, I don’t like this scaremongering because every technological development also offers new opportunities, and those who recognize and make use of them will stay in the game, probably better than ever.

We have examined ChatGPT extensively, specifically with regard to our news portal, and have identified nine opportunities that artificial intelligence offers to journalists and newspapers.

Quick and efficient information retrieval: Although ChatGPT can currently only access data up to 2021, the AI has become an efficiency machine since the integration of the chat feature at Bing, which can search thousands of current news sources within seconds to find the most relevant information. Journalists can quickly respond to current events and research background information.

Assistance in content creation: Artificial intelligence can transform bullet points (e.g. research results) into formulated sentences in the style of the journalist. The AI can also address the needs of the audience.

Creation of interview questions: With an AI, journalists can prepare much more efficiently for appointments and interviews. The AI is capable of obtaining relevant background information within seconds, thereby generating more depth.

Faster fact-checking: Yes, there are cases where “kangaroos lay eggs.” However, there is a gigantic potential in ChatGPT & Co. for fact-checking or validating information.

Creation of headlines for A/B testing: With an AI like ChatGPT, journalists can quickly generate different headlines to try out in A/B tests in different channels.

Reaching new target groups: Through the AI, it is possible to generate texts in different language styles (e.g. simple language) and languages with the same context. This allows editorial teams and publishers to reach new target groups with their content without much additional effort.

Preparing archives: Artificial intelligence can be used to better monetize digitized archives. If the AI knows the archive, it can create valuable dossiers in a short time, which can then be sold by the publisher. Or the AI can be used to quickly put current events into a historical context.

Speed saves costs and/or increases output: The use of artificial intelligence not only increases speed, but also saves time and costs, which publishers will appreciate. The extra time could then be invested in research, which promises more quality, or more articles could be published per day.

To make all these scenarios usable in everyday life, they must be integrated into well-usable tools. We are working on this with our publizer® daily and testing it on and with DieSachsen.de.
