The opening ceremony was attended by high-ranking guests, including Dr. Tan See Leng, Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry); Mr. Png Cheong Boon, Chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB); and Ms. Jacqueline Poh, Chairperson of JTC Corporation. Also in attendance were representatives from TSMC and other valued partners, as well as customers, suppliers, industry associations, and government agencies. Together with the leadership teams from VSMC, VIS, and NXP, the guests gathered to celebrate the opening of the new facility. With construction now complete, the factory has entered the risk production phase; mass production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

VSMC was founded in 2024 and held a groundbreaking ceremony in December of that same year. After 22 months of construction, the factory has successfully processed its first sample batch, achieving yields of over 99%; the scheduled start of mass production remains on track. The factory will support process technologies ranging from 130 nm to 40 nm for mixed-signal, power management, analog, and interposer applications intended for the high-performance computing (HPC), mobile devices, automotive, industrial, and consumer goods end markets.

The fab employs a fully automated smart manufacturing model, integrating artificial intelligence and digital management technologies to continuously improve operational efficiency and the quality of customer service. At full capacity in 2029, the factory is expected to produce approximately 44,000 12-inch wafers per month, create approximately 1,600 jobs, and further strengthen Singapore’s semiconductor ecosystem, while simultaneously opening up new opportunities for collaboration and fostering long-term economic growth in the region’s high-tech industries.

Statements on the Opening

Leuh Fang, Chairman of VSMC and VIS: “Today’s opening ceremony marks a significant milestone for VSMC and reflects VIS’s long-term commitment to deepening its presence in Singapore while expanding its global reach. Since the joint venture was established in 2024, we have worked closely with NXP Semiconductors and our partners to complete the construction of our first 12-inch fab. Now that the fab is officially operational, we are better positioned to meet our customers’ growing demand for specialty IC manufacturing, further strengthen the resilience of the global semiconductor supply chain, and contribute to the continued growth of Singapore’s high-tech industry and semiconductor ecosystem.”

Rafael Sotomayor, President and Chief Executive Officer of NXP Semiconductors: “The VSMC joint venture fab marks an important milestone in further strengthening NXP’s manufacturing base and ensuring long-term coverage of customer demand. Building on decades of business operations and investments in Singapore, VSMC enhances our geographic resilience, supply control, and cost competitiveness, while advancing our differentiated hybrid manufacturing strategy. Our planned manufacturing capacity at VSMC remains unchanged and will help us drive sustainable growth and deliver the innovative technologies that enable the next generation of intelligent edge and physical AI systems.”

Cindy Koh, Executive Vice President, Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB): “The VSMC factory reflects the strong confidence that global companies continue to place in Singapore as a global hub for advanced manufacturing and the semiconductor value chain. Beyond expanding Singapore’s semiconductor ecosystem with new capabilities and capacity, VSMC’s collaboration with our universities will empower our local workforce to contribute to technologies that are shaping industries and trends. VSMC’s efforts in CO₂ reduction, energy efficiency, and water recycling reflect its ongoing commitment to more sustainable manufacturing practices in Singapore.”

VSMC is committed to greater sustainability and fostering future talent. The factory was designed and built in accordance with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards and Singapore’s “Green Mark” standards. Through the use of renewable energy and environmentally friendly manufacturing processes, VSMC continuously improves resource efficiency and reduces its environmental impact. Through these efforts, VSMC is moving closer to its goal of operating a factory that delivers outstanding manufacturing quality while fulfilling its environmental responsibilities. In addition, VSMC actively strengthens collaboration between industry and academia. The company has signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with leading universities in Singapore and supports the next generation of semiconductor talent through internships and vocational training programs, thereby ensuring a sustainable supply of skilled workers for the industry’s future growth.
