KUKA: KUKA AMP Begins Operations in North American Automotive Manufacturing

The open orchestration platform is now operational and actively supports production operations by connecting the existing automation infrastructure with next-generation AI-powered technologies. “Manufacturing is entering a new era,” says Marc Fleischmann, Chief Software and AI Officer of the KUKA Group. “Traditional automation is expanding and evolving. The future lies in combining the precision and reliability of proven industrial automation with the capabilities of AI-powered systems. KUKA AMP forms the foundation for this next step.” By combining proven industrial automation with AI-driven decision-making, KUKA AMP enables manufacturers to increase operational flexibility, boost productivity, and derive greater value from production data.

This implementation represents another step in the KUKA Group’s strategy to move artificial intelligence out of pilot environments and integrate it into real-world manufacturing on a large scale. The U.S. is a key market for the KUKA Group and home to more than 3,400 employees in the areas of engineering, manufacturing, software development, system integration, and customer support. KUKA has operated the KUKA Toledo Production Operations (KTPO) facility since 2006.

The next major leap forward will be driven by “Physical AI”—a new generation of intelligent technologies that enable machines and robots to better understand their environment, continuously learn from operational data, and make increasingly informed decisions in real time. Factories generate enormous amounts of data. Until now, much of this information has lain dormant and unused in isolated systems. KUKA AMP helps customers transform this data into actionable insights so that automation systems can better understand production processes, coordinate activities across workflows, and continuously improve performance. 

“KUKA AMP creates a scalable foundation for Physical AI,” says Fleischmann. “This provides a platform that enables customers to integrate their own AI models and generalize them across production using a common context layer.  The continuous collection and analysis of operational data creates a closed-loop control system that can improve performance over time and help companies deploy intelligent automation on a large scale.”

Deployment of the First Version at KUKA’s Production Facility in Toledo

The first operational deployment of KUKA AMP is taking place at KUKA Toledo Production Operations (KTPO) in Ohio, USA, and will initially focus on autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). The 335,000-square-foot plant produces more than 300 vehicle bodies daily—roughly one every two minutes. KTPO has already produced over two million vehicle bodies, generating vast amounts of production data. 

Since 2006, KTPO has been producing the body-in-white for every Jeep® Wrangler sold worldwide, and since 2019, for the Jeep® Gladiator as well. The highly automated plant combines KUKA’s expertise in welding, joining technologies, and system integration, and utilizes 285 robots as well as more than 60,000 connected devices throughout the production environment.

The facility provides an ideal environment for demonstrating how established industrial automation can be enhanced by AI-driven technologies. “Testing the alpha version of KUKA AMP at KTPO is an important step forward. KTPO is a familiar environment for us, so we can focus on evaluating the platform under realistic conditions and driving improvements that help provide our users with the best possible experience,” says Fleischmann. The goal is to help manufacturers achieve greater efficiency through more comprehensive automation without having to replace existing equipment. By connecting mobile robots, machines, software systems, and data sources, KUKA AMP enables companies to automate more complex processes, increase operational flexibility, reduce changeover times, and derive greater value from existing factory data.
