Semiconductors
Semiconductors are materials whose conductivity lies between conductors and insulators and play a decisive role in the development of modern electronics. The electrical conductivity of semiconductors is controlled by applying a voltage. A semiconductor can have the properties of an insulator as well as those of a conductor. Silicon is probably the best-known semiconductor worldwide and still dominates microelectronics production.
