Rapid advances in AI, the resulting increase in data center power demand, and the expansion of digital infrastructure are driving demand for efficient power distribution solutions. At the same time, power grids are evolving into increasingly complex, decentralized systems, which is accelerating the adoption of DC-based energy systems. Against this backdrop, the two companies intend to collaborate on key technologies to improve the energy efficiency, system performance, and scalability of future energy infrastructures.
“The rising demand for electricity, particularly from AI data centers, is changing the way energy is generated, distributed, and used,” says Andreas Weisl, Executive Vice President and Chief Sales Officer for Industrial & Infrastructure at Infineon. “Highly efficient DC architectures will play a key role in meeting growing energy demand while improving the overall performance and sustainability of power distribution solutions. By combining Infineon’s semiconductor expertise with LS ELECTRIC’s strength in system integration, we are very well positioned to accelerate the development and deployment of next-generation DC energy infrastructure.”
“The importance of highly efficient DC technologies is growing more than ever with the expansion of AI data centers and power grids,” says Kil Young Ahn, Vice President and Head of Production, Research & Business Development at LS ELECTRIC. “Infineon possesses world-leading power semiconductor technologies. Through this collaboration, we will strengthen our competitiveness in core DC energy infrastructure solutions and evolve into a full-service solution provider that leads the global market for AI data centers and future energy systems.”
The collaboration focuses on key components of DC infrastructure, including power conversion solutions for energy storage systems, solid-state transformers (SSTs), and solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs). SSTs are advanced, semiconductor-based power converters that can be up to 30 percent smaller and lighter than conventional copper- and iron-based transformers, while offering higher efficiency. SSCBs use semiconductors and intelligent algorithms to protect electrical circuits from damage caused by short circuits or overloads. They interrupt the flow of current and operate in the microsecond range to improve system stability and protection. These semiconductor-based solutions are becoming increasingly important, particularly in high-power-density environments such as AI data centers. The goal of the collaboration is to improve the efficiency of current and voltage conversion while enhancing the stability and reliability of next-generation DC systems.
Under the memorandum of understanding, Infineon will support the development of highly efficient and high-performance DC energy infrastructure systems with its broad semiconductor portfolio, including power semiconductors, microcontrollers, and energy management solutions. LS ELECTRIC will contribute its expertise in energy systems and industrial automation to drive integration and implementation at the system level. The two companies will align their technology roadmaps and advance joint development efforts to capitalize on growth opportunities in the market for next-generation energy infrastructure.
