Fraunhofer IWU: Optimizing the Self-Consumption of Renewable Energy in Factories and Ensuring Grid Stability with the ESiP Analyzer

June 19, 2026. When properly planned and sized, energy storage systems in production (ESiP) can optimally “utilize” their own renewable energy. The ESiP Analyzer, unveiled at the ees Europe trade show in 2025, has since passed its field tests with flying colors at energy utilities and industrial companies: The tool helps factories improve the integration of renewable energy and reduce power peaks. Experience to date shows that targeted simulations and optimized operating strategies enable the use of nearly half of the self-generated electricity in some scenarios. Grid stability also benefits from the “smoothed” consumption achieved through the use of storage systems.

Efficient Energy Storage Planning with the ESiP Analyzer

The ESiP Analyzer primarily supports energy management in manufacturing companies. In addition to traditional peak load reduction, the tool enables the evaluation of various use cases. It covers a range of energy storage technologies from the machine to the factory level and assists companies in the planning, integration, and operational management of customized energy storage solutions. The development of specific design methods for different application scenarios is a key feature of the tool. In addition, important operational factors such as system efficiency and specific production parameters are incorporated into the simulations. The goal is to support companies not only in selecting the appropriate storage technology but also in developing optimal operating strategies for long-term efficient and cost-effective use.

Benefits and Applications

The ESiP Analyzer demonstrates its capabilities particularly well in real-world application scenarios, even when planning information is incomplete in some cases. Missing values in load profiles or generation data can be reliably supplemented through appropriate scaling and simulations, thereby ensuring that meaningful analyses remain possible. Furthermore, the Analyzer opens up additional possibilities, such as combining different applications (e.g., participation in the energy market, emergency power supply, or improving efficiency through energy feed-back at the machine level).

Interested companies can choose how they wish to use the ESiP Analyzer. Individual project agreements are available for a comprehensive analysis of the current status and recommendations, including consulting services from Fraunhofer IWU experts. License agreements can be concluded for ongoing use.
