At the same time, uncertainty is also on the rise: according to the “State of Skills 2024” study by e-learning provider Skillsoft, 56% of employees in Germany doubt that they have the necessary skills for their current role. 41 percent even fear for their job security due to perceived skills gaps. In particular, respondents believe that their knowledge of AI and machine learning is not sufficient.

The “Global State of the Skills Economy Report” by Skyhive confirms these concerns: The analysis of 40 terabytes of data from over 150 countries shows that job advertisements for AI and machine learning have increased by 65 percent since 2019, while the demand for Gen AI experts has increased by an impressive 411 percent. In addition to the technology sector, many other industries also require these skills, e.g. financial services, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and banking.

Inform about training opportunities

According to Bitkom and HR Pepper, 62 percent of employees feel sufficiently informed about their employer’s training opportunities. However, one in five people would rather trust the AI than their own manager when choosing further training. 39% of respondents in Germany would like to see a combination of interactive and experience-oriented offerings as well as live training. Group training (31 percent), mentoring (30 percent) and coaching (36 percent) are also important components.

There is no lack of willingness to learn among employees – 87% of study participants emphasize the importance of making time for further training in their everyday working lives. Companies should therefore provide the requested formats and communicate the offers sufficiently.
