Bosch: New location for company headquarters and innovation center opened in Japan

September 6, 2024. Bosch is reaffirming its commitment to Japan with an investment of 270 million euros in a new location in Yokohama. The investment is going towards a state-of-the-art new Japanese company headquarters – at the same time, development capacities for the mobility sector from several locations are now bundled there. In addition, a new urban cultural center – the Tsuzuki Ward Cultural Center – has been created in the same building as part of the construction project. This is Bosch’s first participation in a public-private partnership project worldwide.

Tanja Rückert, Member of the Board of Management of Robert Bosch GmbH responsible for Japan, said at the press conference: “I am very proud of our new energy-efficient and innovatively designed headquarters – it is a perfect fit for a tech-savvy country like Japan. As the Bosch Group’s first public-private partnership, the location is a commitment to our ongoing involvement in the Japanese market – it is a sign that we will continue to feel closely connected to the Japanese market and the people here and continue our 113-year history in the country.”

Klaus Meder, Bosch President in Japan, said at the inauguration: “In the new headquarters, we are bringing together the activities of various units in one place – thereby strengthening cross-divisional cooperation and our development in Japan.”

The new building covers almost 53,000 square meters. Around 2,000 employees from eight locations in the greater Tokyo area and Yokohama are now working even more closely together there. This includes employees from administration, sales and marketing as well as research and development for the Mobility division. “In the new, innovatively designed areas, our highly qualified specialists will be able to shape the future of mobility across all divisions and respond even more specifically to the needs of our local customers,” explained Meder. Local development activities will focus on areas such as driver assistance systems and automated driving.

Technology meets culture: energy-efficient solutions and experience factor

The focus at the new location is on energy efficiency. Bosch relies on smart building technology and the use of renewable energy sources – including solar cells and an automated ventilation system. The Tsuzuki Ward cultural center built by Bosch as a project partner on the site is called “Bosch Hall” and has around 300 seats and a gallery. The “Café 1886 at Bosch”, which already operated at the previous Bosch headquarters site in Shibuya, has also been reopened on the first floor of the new building complex. The café is open to external guests as well as associates – they can also enjoy German specialties there.

Bosch in Japan: tradition and innovative strength

Bosch has been present in Japan since 1911 and is now represented there with activities of its four business sectors. In 2023, the technology and services company generated sales of 2.79 billion euros (420 billion yen) in the country. Bosch employs around 6,400 associates in Japan, including around 1,700 researchers and developers. The company manufactures mobility solutions and hydraulic systems at ten major plants in Japan. Since 2015, the global headquarters for the Two-Wheeler and Powersports product division has been located in Yokohama – this is the first business unit of the company whose management is based outside Germany.
