52% say they have never heard of the European project, a further 18% are familiar with the term but do not know what it is about. A fifth (20 percent) say they know what the EUDI wallet is and a further 5 percent believe they can explain it well. 5 percent did not want to or could not provide any information. These are the results of a survey of 1,004 people aged 16 and over in Germany commissioned by the digital association Bitkom. With the EUDI wallet, official documents such as ID cards or driving licenses can be stored and used on a smartphone like in a digital wallet. But it can also be used to secure other digital documents such as certificates, insurance or purchase contracts. “The EUDI Wallet is one of the most important innovations of these years – a secure digital identity for all Europeans,” says Bitkom President Dr. Ralf Wintergerst. “The EUDI wallet should become the standard and we now need a broad awareness campaign to achieve this.”
More than 100 companies have signed a joint “Memorandum of Understanding” between the Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernization and Bitkom and want to quickly offer applications based on the EUDI wallet and drive development forward together. How this can be achieved, which pilot applications already exist and which regulatory requirements exist is the topic of this year’s Bitkom eIDAS Summit. It will take place on April 28 in Berlin and on April 29 online. Among others, Dr. Karsten Wildberger, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and State Modernization, Norbert Sagstetter from the European Commission, Dr. Markus Reichel, rapporteur for digital identities of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group and Bitkom Vice President Christina Raab, CEO of Accenture DACH. All information on speakers, the program and the opportunity to participate can be found online here: eidas-summit.de.
