July 20, 2026. German companies want their cloud data to be processed within Germany. For 97 percent, the location of their cloud service providers’ servers plays a role in their choice of provider. And all of them (100 percent) would prefer Germany as the location. These are the findings of a representative survey of 603 companies with 20 or more employees, commissioned by the digital industry association Bitkom.

“Companies want their data to be stored in Germany and their cloud applications to run in Germany. To enable the construction of the necessary data centers, we need internationally competitive electricity prices, rapid connection to the power grid, and faster approval processes for new construction projects,” says Bitkom President Dr. Ralf Wintergerst. “The planned AI gigafactories and the EU Cloud & AI Development Act must therefore be implemented quickly.”
France is the preferred location for 23 percent, while 17 percent rule the country out entirely. A location in one of the other EU member states is preferred by 68 percent, while only 1 percent rejects it. The United Kingdom receives 14 percent approval and 32 percent rejection. Data centers in the U.S. are preferred by 12 percent, while 51 percent rule them out. Similar figures apply to Japan (9 percent in favor versus 60 percent opposed) and India (5 percent in favor versus 73 percent opposed). Only 1 percent prefers China as a location, while 94 percent rule the country out.
