Bechtle: Apple tender won by the federal administration

July 15, 2024. The Procurement Office of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Homeland (BMI) has concluded a framework agreement with Bechtle AG for the delivery of up to 300,000 Apple devices for the entire German federal administration. This means that all federal authorities can obtain iPhones and iPads that are approved for official use by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) under the indigo project (iOS Native Devices in Government Operation) exclusively from Bechtle. The framework agreement also includes the delivery of accessories and the provision of services relating to the use of the mobile devices. The total contract value is up to EUR 770 million and runs until the end of 2027.

Bechtle AG is realizing the contract as the main contractor with its long-standing manufacturing partner Apple and the IT service provider Materna for the implementation of an indigo-compliant solution. The aim of the framework agreement is to significantly advance the modernization of the federal administration’s IT infrastructure. The use of native iOS devices will create a highly secure and efficient communication infrastructure that is specially tailored to the requirements of the public sector. The Apple iOS and iPadOS platforms offer a comprehensive combination of integrated security features, regular updates, hardware-based encryption and strict data protection guidelines. It is approved by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for the secure exchange of confidential content that is classified as classified information and “for official use only” (VS-NfD).

Bechtle also supplies end device accessories such as protective covers and styluses and provides services ranging from consulting and implementation to the operation of mobile environments, including user support. The Bechtle IT system house in Bonn, which has been active in the public sector for many years, is responsible for the operational implementation and management of the project throughout Germany.
