Modern vehicles must support a growing number of digital functions. Controlling these functions via separate electronic control units (ECUs) increases complexity in development and parts management and limits scalability. The zone architecture addresses this challenge by using high-performance microcontrollers that consolidate multiple vehicle functions into fewer ECUs.
In addition to high-performance processors that provide central computing power and make complex decisions for AI-based functions such as autonomous driving and advanced infotainment, the S32K5 microcontrollers serve as the core processors for the vehicle’s zone control systems. They connect sensors and actuators, collect and process data from specific areas of the vehicle, and control functions such as lighting, body, comfort, chassis, and safety systems. These capabilities form the foundation for the central computing platform on which AI algorithms are executed and advanced functions are delivered.
NXP’s S32K5 microcontrollers make it possible to consolidate functions—which previously required separate chips and control units—into zone control systems, thereby reducing hardware complexity. They are intended to serve as a common building block for the future zonal SDV architecture being developed by Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, LLC (RV Tech)—the joint venture between the Volkswagen Group and Rivian. The architecture is intended for use in vehicles from both companies and will enable brand-specific functions and user experiences.
The partnership is part of the Volkswagen Group’s overarching semiconductor strategy. Through direct, long-term partnerships with leading semiconductor companies, the Volkswagen Group combines its automotive expertise with state-of-the-art chip technology to strengthen supply security and jointly shape key technologies for future vehicle generations. This approach supports the “Group Target Picture 2030” and aims to leverage synergies across brands and regions and harmonize key technologies.
Statements
“Semiconductors are a strategic technology for the automotive industry. In recent years, we have systematically expanded our technology ecosystem and established partnerships with leading companies across the entire value chain. Our partnership with NXP is another step in this direction and demonstrates how the Volkswagen Group is taking on a more active role in the semiconductor value chain: We define our technology needs early on, leverage our scale across brands, and create greater long-term planning certainty for both sides.”
Karsten Schnake, Member of the Extended Board of Management and Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand, responsible for Procurement
“Our future zone architecture, developed by RV Tech and supported by strategic technology partners such as NXP, creates a scalable technological foundation for multiple Group brands and vehicle segments. By harmonizing key technologies across the Group, we reduce complexity, leverage economies of scale, and accelerate innovation, while simultaneously enabling advanced digital features. This allows us to deliver digital innovations to our customers more quickly and continuously improve our vehicles throughout their entire lifecycle.”
Werner Tietz, Member of the Extended Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group, responsible for Group Research and Development
“Intelligent, software-defined vehicles must operate safely, securely, and reliably. Together with the Volkswagen Group and RV Tech, NXP combines scalable real-time computing power, trusted edge intelligence, and continuous software innovation to create a scalable foundation for the next generation of intelligent vehicles.”
Rafael Sotomayor, President and CEO, NXP Semiconductors
“Software-driven differentiation is the new standard in the automotive industry, and NXP is pleased that the S32K5 family of microcontrollers has been integrated into RV Tech’s innovative new zone architecture—one of the most sophisticated approaches to optimized development and differentiating features in today’s automotive industry. As the core processor for the vehicle’s zone controllers, the S32K5 is designed for secure real-time computing power, fast and secure OTA updates, and the consolidation of functions—which together form the foundation for a flexible, continuously updatable vehicle.”
