After four years of intensive collaboration, the METIS project, which was launched in 2019, came to an end in November this year. The consortium, consisting of 18 partners from various European countries including Silicon Saxony, has worked tirelessly to counteract the shortage of skilled workers and strengthen the competitiveness of the European microelectronics sector.

The closing event, which coincided with the Chips JU Launch Event in Brussels from 30.11. to 01.12.2023, was characterized by high-level discussions and unveilings of the project’s key results.

The discussion, moderated by Silicon Saxony’s Senior Project Manager Alesia Lässig, brought together experts from the fields of microelectronics, IC design and EU policy. Among others, Laith Altimime from SEMI Europe, Francoise Chombar from MELEXIS, LaĂ«titia Guisot from X-FAB, Felix Rohn from the EU Commission and Bernd Deutschmann from Graz University of Technology were present to discuss and comment on the key results of the project.

The results presented included:

  • Skills strategy and skills monitoring report: Identification of the most critical job profiles and skills in the industry.
  • METIS Training Catalog: Collection of 88 online courses for EQF4-EQF8 skill levels aimed at supporting workforce upskilling and reskilling. Modules included: Component Design, System Design, Fundamentals of Manufacturing and Key Skills and Innovative Thinking
  • Long Term Action Plan: outlining various step including the creation of the EU-wide Chips Skills Alliance to implement the principles of the EU Pact for Skills for Microelectronics. Other measures included the continuous monitoring of skills trends, the creation of a decentralized EU Chips Skills Academy through increased cooperation between academia and industry, and the networking of all EU skills initiatives and projects under one roof.

The METIS project is leaving a lasting and meaningful impact on the European microelectronics landscape, paving the way for a better equipped and more competitive industry in the future.
