TU Dresden: Opening of the first quantum computer laboratory for hybrid edge applications

February 3, 2025. As part of the QUARKS project, a pioneering quantum computing laboratory for edge computing applications in next-generation networks has been opened at TU Dresden. The lab consists of three interconnected quantum computers and serves as a test environment for proving the quantum advantage in edge computing in the upcoming 6G era. Edge computing refers to the computation of network functionalities, operations and applications in close proximity to the radio access network to meet the very demanding goals of low latency and resilience. The interplay of quantum and non-quantum computing could be the key solution for the edge.

The laboratory is being realized in cooperation with the Technical University of Munich and the company XeedQ and represents a milestone for research in Saxony and Germany. The QUARKS Quantum Edge Computing Lab is unique in Germany and one of the few of its kind in the world. It offers the opportunity to research and test the necessity of quantum computing in future 6G networks – with relevant implications for innovation and the economy.

The realization of this project was made possible by funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
