For over four decades, x86 has been the foundation of modern computing and has established itself as the architecture of choice in data centers and PCs worldwide. In today’s evolving landscape – characterized by dynamic AI workloads, custom chiplets, and advances in 3D packaging and system architectures – the importance of a robust and expanding x86 ecosystem is more critical than ever.

“We are on the cusp of one of the most significant changes in the x86 architecture and ecosystem in decades – with new levels of customization, compatibility and scalability required to meet current and future customer needs,” said Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel. “We are proud to partner with AMD and the founding members of this advisory group to ignite the future of computing, and we greatly appreciate the support of so many industry leaders.”

“Establishing the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group will ensure that the x86 architecture continues to evolve as the preferred computing platform for developers and customers,” said Lisa Su, AMD chairman and CEO. “We are excited to bring the industry together to set the direction for future architectural improvements and build on the incredible success of x86 for decades to come.”

The advisory group aims to bring industry leaders together to shape the future of x86 and encourage developer innovation through a more unified set of instructions and architectural interfaces. This initiative will improve the compatibility, predictability and consistency of x86 product offerings. To accomplish this, the group will solicit technical input from the x86 hardware and software communities on key features and functionality. The collaboration will enable the creation of consistent Improve choice and compatibility for customers across hardware and software, while enabling them to benefit faster from new, innovative features.

Simplify architectural guidelines to improve software consistency and interfaces across Intel and AMD x86 product offerings.

Enabling broader and more efficient integration of new features into operating systems, frameworks and applications.

As strong competitors, Intel and AMD simultaneously have a history of industry collaboration focused on platform-level advances, standards adoption and mitigation of security vulnerabilities within the x86 ecosystem. Their joint efforts have shaped key technologies such as PCI, PCIe and ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface). Both companies also played a critical role in the development of USB, a key connectivity standard for all computers, regardless of processor. This advisory group takes this industry collaboration to the next level, benefiting the entire computing ecosystem and catalyzing product innovation.
