This article explores how Bosch’s state-of-the-art sensors, including the robust barometric pressure sensor BMP585, the world-smallest particulate matter sensor BMV080, and the 4-in-1 gas sensor with artificial intelligence BME688 are driving the evolution of smarter homes.

The BMP585 is a robust barometric pressure sensor that can be used underwater and in harsh environments due to its liquid-proof gel cover maintaining an excellent accuracy, low power and low noise performance. Used in washing machines the BMP585 can detect the water level in the drum. On the one hand side this avoids flooding but also helps to reduce the water consumption for each washing cycle. If the BMP585 is used in a vacuum cleaner, the sensor avoids clogging by constantly measuring the air flow through the dust bin. Here the air pressure begins to drop as soon as the air flow stagnates because of too much dust in the filter. This drop can be detected by the sensor.
Additionally, the vacuum cleaner motor can be adjusted depending on the floor material like carpet or hard floor. Air flow monitoring with the BMP585 is also useful in application such as air conditioning or ventilation systems.

The BMV080 is the world’s smallest particulate matter (PM2.5) air quality sensor (450 times smaller in volume than alternatives) with an innovative fanless design based on ultra-compact lasers with integrated photodiodes. It applies sophisticated algorithms to measure the PM2.5 (fine dust hazardous to health and the environment) concentration directly in free space, without requiring a fan making it silent and maintenance-free. The sensor is easily integrated into ultra-compact IoT-based smart home and smart building systems such as air quality monitors, smart thermostats, smart speakers, smart switches and smart air purifiers. It delivers air quality notifications to residents when PM2.5 levels rise above a threshold level for example among others due to cooking or an in-home fireplace. To take action, the resident or home automation system can ventilate by opening a window, switching on an exhaust fan or filter to clear the air.

The BME688 is a 4-in-1 gas sensor with AI that measures gases, humidity, temperature and barometric pressure in a single compact package and enables a straightforward customization for specific use cases. The gas sensor in the BME688 has a broad sensitivity and reacts to most volatile compounds as well as many other gases polluting indoor air. The intensity of the signal typically scales with the chemical reactivity of the gases. In contrast to sensors selective for one specific component, the BME688 is capable of measuring Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and other gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the part per billion (ppb) range. Integrated into smart home systems, the BME688 gas sensor can detect outgassing high VOC levels from spoiled food in a fridge or garbage in a dust bin and inform the residents to take action. Furthermore, the AI features enable customers to train the sensor to their specific needs and use cases.
