State Secretary Udo Philipp: “Small and medium-sized enterprises, the skilled trades and start-ups need support in overcoming the challenges of digitalization, especially when it comes to the key issue of cyber security. We have therefore been supporting SMEs in preventing cyber attacks for many years. If the worst comes to the worst, help is needed quickly. I am therefore very pleased that – in addition to the CYBERsicher check – we can now offer quick and targeted support with the CYBERsicher emergency aid from our “IT Security in Business” initiative with just a few clicks.”
The digitalization of business and society is increasing the attack surface for cybercrime. The challenges of cyber security affect SMEs in particular. According to the latest BITKOM survey from August 2024, the damage caused to the German economy by the digital world amounts to 266 billion euros per year. Two thirds of this damage is caused by cyberattacks.
Small and medium-sized enterprises, start-ups and craft businesses are now frequently the target of cyberattacks. Due to a lower level of IT protection and a frequent underestimation of the risk, they are often particularly at risk. One of the biggest cyber risks are so-called ransomware attacks, which are used to encrypt all of a company’s data. The decryption of the data is then offered in return for blackmail.
In Germany, more support is now available in such cases. The Cybersecurity Transfer Office for SMEs has developed CYBERsicher emergency assistance, a tool that helps companies to assess the incident with just a few clicks. Based on an online self-check, companies receive recommendations for action, information on suitable public contact points and feedback on possible assistance from available IT service providers. To check whether they need better protection, companies can also carry out the so-called CYBERsicher-Check of the Transferstelle Cybersicherheit im Mittelstand.
