Bitkom: Tech companies demand more independence from the USA

December 5, 2024. Germany’s digital economy is looking to the USA with concern: 79% of tech companies believe that Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election has weakened or even destroyed trust in the United States. For 21% it is slightly weakened and for 44% it is considerably weakened, while a further 14% believe that trust will be destroyed as a result. 73% are concerned about developments in the USA – and 78% believe that Donald Trump’s election victory will damage the German economy. This is the result of a survey conducted by the digital association Bitkom, in which 329 companies from the digital sector took part.

It is not representative, but provides reliable trend statements. According to the survey, 6 out of 10 of the tech companies surveyed assume that the political developments in the USA will have a concrete impact on their company or business: 24% expect positive effects, while 36% expect negative effects. An overwhelming majority of 92% demand that Germany must now become more independent of the USA. 96% believe that more must be done to ensure Germany’s digital sovereignty in the future. “Germany must position itself to be stronger, more resilient and more opportunity-oriented. To achieve this, we need to become more technologically and economically independent. Our digital sovereignty is crucial to whether we will still be perceived as a strong player on an international level in the future and whether we will be able to act,” says Bitkom President Dr. Ralf Wintergerst.

In this context, 86% of the digital companies participating in the survey are calling for more European hyperscalers, i.e. large, powerful cloud providers. Germany and Europe are currently lagging far behind the USA and China in terms of data center performance, as a recent Bitkom study shows. “In the USA, two to three times as much data center capacity is added every year as is installed in Germany. If we want to keep pace technologically and strengthen our digital sovereignty, this will not be possible without a powerful and resilient infrastructure,” says Wintergerst. However, 80% of digital companies are of the opinion that Germany and Europe are in danger of being left behind technologically by the USA. Only 16% of the companies surveyed believe that the USA will be a reliable partner for Germany under Donald Trump.
