“ChatGPT has ignited the turbo for AI. For many people, the application was their first conscious contact with artificial intelligence and triggered a broad public debate about the technology. At the same time, ChatGPT has shown us what is possible with AI today. This has triggered a rapid surge in the development of generative AI over the past twelve months,” says Bitkom President Dr. Ralf Wintergerst.
ChatGPT at work: 17 percent use generative AI without their employer’s knowledge
The vast majority of ChatGPT users use the tool for private purposes (82 percent), but half (50 percent) also use ChatGPT at work – 33 percent with their employer’s knowledge and 17 percent without their employer’s knowledge. Only a quarter of employees (24%) have company rules for the use of generative AI such as ChatGPT. 29 percent have no such guidelines, but would like to have some, and 40 percent have no rules and do not want any.
Around half of all ChatGPT users (53 percent) say that the dialogs with the AI are fun, and among the younger 16 to 29 percent, the proportion is as high as 66 percent. 3 in 10 (32 percent) say that they were fascinated by the AI’s answers. But only 13 percent say that ChatGPT has helped them with problems. A fifth (20 percent) complain that it takes too much time to get helpful answers from ChatGPT, while 14 percent find that the chatbot too often does not understand their questions properly. Wintergerst: “At first glance, using generative AI is very easy. But to get helpful answers, you have to learn to give the AI the necessary background information and formulate work orders precisely. These are skills that need to be taught in the future, at school and at work.” Users should also know how to quickly check the results for accuracy.
Generative AI scares older people
A two-thirds majority (66 percent) believe that ChatGPT & Co. will fundamentally change our lives. In contrast, 38 percent believe that generative AI is a trend that will soon pass. At the same time, the new form of AI also causes concern: 41% say that ChatGPT scares them. There are clear differences between the age groups. While only 28% of 16 to 29-year-olds are afraid of generative AI, the figure is 57% for the 65-plus generation. “AI can significantly reduce the barriers to digital participation. We no longer have to learn to communicate like computers, the computers articulate themselves – almost – like humans,” says Wintergerst.
Methodological note
The data is based on a survey conducted by Bitkom Research on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. This involved a telephone survey of 1,004 people aged 16 and over in Germany. The survey is representative.
