This year marks the sixth time it has been published by the digital association Bitkom. The ranking is based on an analysis for which a total of 13,284 data points were collected, reviewed and qualified in five categories. The following cities made it into the top 10 (in alphabetical order):
- Bochum
- Dresden
- Freiburg im Breisgau
- Hamburg
- Cologne
- Lübeck
- Munich
- Nuremberg
- Stuttgart
- Ulm
Who is at the top this year, The complete ranking and the placement of all 82 cities will be presented in the run-up to the Smart Country Convention in an online press conference on 16. September 2024 will be presented. The results will then also be available online at www.bitkom.org.
“The Smart City Index primarily highlights the progress made in digitalization – and not just in the top 10. While the average index score across all cities in 2021 was 52.4 points, this year it is 67.6 points,” says Bitkom President Dr Ralf Wintergerst. “We are also seeing great momentum in the Smart City Index this year, especially in the individual categories. It’s not just the really big cities that are shining with smart solutions; our cities are becoming more digital and future-proof across the board. With the Smart City Index, we want to give cities a basis for comparison for their own digital activities, make examples of success visible and, above all, support the many committed people in all cities in their digitalization efforts.”
5 categories, 162 parameters, 13,284 data points
The Smart City Index analyses and evaluates cities in five categories: Administration, IT and Communication, Energy and Environment, Mobility, and Society and Education. For each city, 162 parameters were examined – from online citizen services to sharing offers for mobility and smart traffic lights to broadband availability or digital training for teachers or administrative staff. Index values were calculated for each city in the five categories, from which the overall value and overall ranking are derived. The Smart City Index is supported by Visa, PwC and Bentley Systems.
Digitalization of cities and regions is the theme of the Smart Country Convention
The Smart City Index will be presented in the run-up to the Smart Country Convention, which will take place in Berlin from 15 to 17 October. The central theme of the joint event organized by Messe Berlin and Bitkom is the digitalization of administrations and public institutions. Speakers include Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser, Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Affairs Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs and Latvian Minister of Economy Viktors Valainis as well as Daniel Risch, Head of Government and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Finance of the Principality of Liechtenstein. The event is aimed at representatives of the federal government, federal states, districts, cities and municipalities as well as subordinate authorities and municipal companies.
