“People in Germany are gradually becoming impatient when it comes to digitalization,” comments Bitkom President Dr Ralf Wintergerst on the survey results. “For decision-makers in politics and business, this should be an encouragement and a mandate to tackle the digital transformation with more courage and to take everyone with them.” Only 13% of Germans still feel that the pace of digitalization is too fast or much too fast (2024: 22%). However, one in ten (10 percent) think the current pace is just right, compared to 16 percent in 2024.
The desire for more speed is offset by the challenge of getting everyone involved in digitalization: Because at the same time, a total of 45 percent of Germans worry about not being able to keep up with technological developments. “People in Germany see the opportunities of digitalization and want to take advantage of them,” says Wintergerst. “Good digitalization takes everyone with it. It has to be understandable and accessible – regardless of age, education or social status.”
The concern about not being able to keep up digitally is particularly widespread among older people. Among 16 to 29-year-olds, 35% say this, and 36% among 30 to 49-year-olds. The figure is 46% among 50- to 64-year-olds, 53% among 65- to 74-year-olds and 67% among the over-75s. There are also differences between women and men: 49 percent of women are worried that they will not be able to keep up with technological developments, compared to 40 percent of men.
This is where Digital Day, in which Bitkom is involved as a partner, comes in. The nationwide day of action for digital participation will take place this year on 26 June and will bring digitalization to life throughout Germany – on site, online and hybrid. There will be workshops, consultations, guided tours, discussions and hands-on activities on digital technologies, skills and security. The Digital Day is backed by the “Digital for All” initiative – a broad alliance of 27 organizations from civil society, culture, science, business, welfare and the public sector. All Digital Day campaigns can be found in the campaign overview and on the interactive campaign map: digitaltag.eu/aktionslandkarte-2026
Methodological note
A total of 1,005 people aged 16 and over in Germany were surveyed by telephone. The survey took place in the period from week 15 to week 19 2026. The survey is representative. The questions were: “How do you personally feel about the pace of digitalization of the economy and society in Germany?” and “To what extent do the following statements about digitalization apply to you or in your opinion?”. In your opinion?”.
