As automation is becoming increasingly important in accident repair, BASF Coatings is working closely with robotics providers, pilot customers and industry partners. The aim is to provide customers with validated process expertise and practical support for the introduction of robot-assisted repair processes. This commitment goes beyond pure testing and validation. BASF Coatings is actively involved in the development of future application standards, scalable process models and the integration of robotics into real workshop processes. BASF Coatings does not develop its own robotics hardware. The differentiation lies rather in the deep understanding of paints, application processes and system integration in the repair sector.

Robotics extends networked repair processes

Robotics is understood as a consistent extension of BASF Coatings’ end-to-end digital paint process. Within the Refinity® ecosystem – the digital platform for controlling and networking workshop processes – digital color measurement, color matching, mixing processes and workflow management already ensure efficient and consistent repair processes. Robotics complements this process step by linking digital process control with physical paint application.

“Robotics combines digital color management and physical application into a continuous, networked process,” says Chen Liu, Global Head of Technology Automotive Refinish Coatings. “The key difference is not the robot itself, but how BASF integrates paint, process and application expertise to ensure consistently high quality under real workshop conditions. By combining these strengths, we are creating scalable and reproducible application standards that will shape the future of the repair industry.”

Focus on efficiency, consistency and future-proof repair processes

First robotics applications focus primarily on standardized applications of primer, basecoat and clearcoat on complete vehicle parts. The focus here is on repeat accuracy, throughput and material efficiency. As the technology matures, it is expected that robotics will also be used in more specific processes in the future, such as secondary painting or interior painting.

“We see robotics as an important topic for the future and want to help customers navigate safely in this evolving environment,” says Roar Solberg. “Our approach is to provide guidance, validation and close collaboration so that customers can make informed decisions for future-proof repair processes.”

By combining paint expertise, digital workflows and application know-how, BASF Coatings aims to support the development of more efficient, consistent and future-proof repair processes worldwide.
