adesso: A look into the crystal ball – Five (possible) GenAI headlines in 2025

January 29, 2025. In contrast to conventional AI systems, which are generally used for clearly defined and narrowly defined tasks, generative AI (GenAI) is characterized by flexibility and versatility in the creation of content. The technology is able to generate new, coherent and often surprising content from the information available to it. Expectations are correspondingly high, and in some cases completely exaggerated. So what does the new year hold for the world of generative AI?

The IT service provider adesso ventures a look into the crystal ball and checks five fictitious headlines for 2025 for their veracity. The list shows how the current hype surrounding GenAI could continue – or not:

  • “GenAI is sweeping through the world of work like a hurricane – no job is safe.”
GenAI will undoubtedly be a game changer. From automated contract drafting to real-time analysis of business data – the potential applications are virtually unlimited. But does this really mean a revolution? The fact is that professions and job profiles have always been evolving. Two decades ago, job titles such as social media manager or big data analyst sounded exotic. However, new roles and different areas of responsibility are part of the working world. This has never been different and is the case with every technological upheaval. A complete reorganization? Hardly. But it certainly remains exciting.
Truth content: 50 percent – the world of work is becoming more dynamic, but not dominated by AI.
  • “Software development no longer needs human expertise.”
The prophets of automation had predicted otherwise: Writing code, fixing bugs, building applications – all this was supposed to happen as if by magic with GenAI. But the reality is different. There is no question that the technology can make developers’ everyday lives easier. But creative problem-solving, complex architectural planning and a deep understanding of requirements – that remains a very human domain. Conclusion: AI is a helper, not a magic wand.
Truth content: 30 percent – GenAI can take over many routine tasks, but cannot replace human expertise.
  • “GenAI is child’s play – everything else is doom and gloom.”
The illusion of a simple GenAI project quickly evaporates. Anyone who thought they could complete the digital transformation with just a few mouse clicks will be proven wrong in 2025. Because the A in GenAI does not stand for abracadabra, but for work. Preparing data, training models, monitoring results – the road is rocky, but it’s worth it. The effort pays off if the technology is used efficiently.
Truth content: 20 percent – The implementation of projects is becoming easier than before, but is still not a sure-fire success.
  • “The Nobel Prize for Literature goes to OpenAI.”
AI fans had firmly believed it: the first Nobel Prize for an algorithm is only a matter of time. But even in 2025, the literary scene will still be dominated by humans. Why? Because true creativity is more than just stringing together probabilities. Without intuition, emotion and life experience, GenAI remains a brilliant imitator, but not a true artist. In short: that certain something cannot be cast in code.
Truth content: 5 percent – after all, Bob Dylan has already won the Nobel Prize once.
  • “AI acquires its own consciousness.”
Reassuring news for skeptics: the dystopia of omnipotent machines remains science fiction this year. GenAI has neither a consciousness nor its own goals – it is and remains a tool. Rather, the applications benefit from the omnipresent trend towards anthropomorphization, i.e. the humanization of technology. The danger lies elsewhere: it is not AI itself that is the problem, but its potential misuse by humans. Clear rules and responsible monitoring are therefore essential.
Truth content: 0 percent – GenAI is and remains a tool.

“It is difficult to estimate what we can actually expect from GenAI in the future. Instead of chasing unrealistic promises, companies should focus on the here and now. After all, we are currently experiencing an exciting technological leap with GenAI – nothing more and nothing less,” emphasizes Volker Gruhn, founder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of adesso SE. “GenAI will inspire us and help us to develop new ideas. The key is to use the opportunities responsibly without underestimating the risks.”
