According to the 17 global sustainability goals of the United Nations, the renowned British magazine “Times Higher Education” annually examines the impact of universities in these categories for the “THE Impact Ranking”. The universities are evaluated according to how much they contribute to the realization of these goals, e.g. through research projects, industrial cooperation, knowledge transfer to society or study programs.

For the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure”, with which TUD participated, the ranking records the research performance in fields that are considered significant for sustainably effective innovations. It evaluates how often TU Dresden research is cited in patents, how many start-ups are spun off, and how much third-party research funding the universities receive from industry. Overall, TU Dresden received 94 out of a possible 100 points here.

According to the DFG Funding Atlas, TU Dresden is one of the German universities with the most third-party funding. A recent study by the Institute of the German Economy sees the TU Dresden as the university with the most patents in Germany by a wide margin.
