SEMI logo “The silicon wafer market is recovering due to strong demand for data center and generative AI products,” said Lee Chungwei, Chairman of SEMI SMG and Vice President and Chief Auditor at GlobalWafers. “While the recovery is uneven across applications, shipments of 300mm wafers recorded 8% quarter-on-quarter growth in the second quarter, the best performance among all wafer sizes. There are a growing number of new semiconductor factories under construction or ramping up production volumes. This expansion and the longer-term trend towards a $1 trillion semiconductor market will inevitably lead to higher demand for silicon wafers.”
The data cited in this release includes polished silicon wafers, including those used as new test wafers, as well as epitaxial silicon wafers and non-polished silicon wafers supplied by wafer manufacturers to end users.
Silicon wafers are the fundamental building material for most semiconductors, which are key components of all electronic devices. The highly engineered thin wafers are produced in diameters up to 12 inches and serve as the substrate material on which most semiconductors are manufactured.
The SMG is a subcommittee of the SEMI Electronic Materials Group (EMG) and is open to all SEMI members involved in the manufacture of polycrystalline silicon, monocrystalline silicon or silicon wafers (e.g., sliced, polished, epi). The SMG promotes collaborative work on issues affecting the silicon industry, including the development of market intelligence and statistics on the silicon industry and semiconductor market.
