Dresden, June 11, 2024: A great atmosphere at Dresden Airport. More than 700 industry representatives, sector experts and scientists from over 20 countries met today at the 18th Silicon Saxony Day 2024 in the heart of the European semiconductor industry. A key issue for the German semiconductor cluster: how can the establishment and expansion of chip factories be reconciled with the development of Dresden’s urban infrastructure and the recruitment of skilled workers and employees? For the semiconductor association, this is a key to success for further growth in the European high-tech region. “The commissioning of the new production capacities marks the beginning of a new era for Silicon Saxony. The importance of chips will remain high in the future. We assume that other companies will also find their way to Saxony in order to benefit from the research density, production and expertise of the many medium-sized companies,” says Dirk Röhrborn, CEO of Silicon Saxony.

Silicon Saxony: magnet for skilled workers

At Silicon Saxony’s most important event of the year, the high-tech industry association presented new figures on the development of industry in Saxony. The location has developed continuously and solidly in recent years. The annual increases correspond to linear growth, as has been observed since the early 2000s. “In 2023, however, the industry grew more strongly than in previous years,” explains Frank Bösenberg, Managing Director of Silicon Saxony. The microelectronics and ICT sector grew by 6.4 percent to 81,000 employees in 2023. The software industry is also developing, albeit somewhat less dynamically in 2023, growing by just under 2 percent to 40,000 employees. “We are sticking to our forecast that more than 100,000 people will be working in demanding jobs in Silicon Saxony in 2030. With last year’s growth, we are still clearly heading in this direction,” says Frank Bösenberg. The industry association sees the main reasons for this in the increase in personnel, which is directly and indirectly linked to investment and expansion. “The development shows that jobs with prospects are still attractive. The figures show that Silicon Saxony is a magnet for skilled workers,” says Frank Bösenberg.
