March 23, 2024. To help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) increase their cyber resilience, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has developed the CyberRiskCheck together with partners. It offers SMEs standardized, needs-based advice from IT service providers. The federal cyber security authority has now trained more than 60 IT service providers to use the new procedure for the first time.

The threat situation in cyberspace is worrying. The number of attacks on commercial enterprises is rising steadily and criminal attacks are causing record damage. Small and medium-sized enterprises are also increasingly affected by cyber attacks. SMEs are not usually targeted as victims, but are hit by large-scale and automated attacks. Many SMEs would therefore like to do more for their IT security, but often do not know how.
The CyberRiskCheck enables a company to determine its own IT security level and shows which specific measures a company should implement or commission from an IT service provider. 64 IT security service providers from all over Germany have now been trained to carry out the CyberRiskCheck in Bonn. Participation in the training is a prerequisite for using the software that the BSI provides to IT service providers for carrying out the CyberRiskCheck. The BSI obtains anonymized survey data from the procedure, which is used to generate an information security situation map for SMEs.
BSI President Claudia Plattner: “The CyberRiskCheck is a real win-win-win product: for the small companies, for the IT service providers and for the BSI. We have thus laid the foundation for an SME cyber security situation map, and this is an important step on the way to making Germany a cyber nation. We are delighted that more than 120 other IT service providers have already expressed their interest in taking part in the CyberRiskCheck.”
Further training dates are in preparation and will be published by the BSI in the near future.
