“In microelectronics, Japan and Saxony have always been an excellent match. We will therefore once again use the SEMICON Japan trade fair to further network Saxony in Japan and also to promote it throughout the Asia-Pacific region as a key European location for microelectronics and information and communication technologies. Japanese companies are among the leading suppliers of semiconductor equipment and materials and account for around 30 percent of global sales in this sector. In addition, Japan is currently investing heavily in rebuilding its chip industry in order to catch up with the leading producers. With companies such as Rapidus and the support of foreign players such as TSMC, Japan is aiming to produce 2 nm chips. For Saxon companies, this growing market environment and the exchange with these innovative companies is important for their own further development and for securing future sales opportunities. With our presence at the trade fair, we are also building on our company trip in October and want to continue the synergies that arose from this in order to expand the network between Saxon and Japanese partners in a targeted manner and strengthen interest in our location in the long term,” explains WFS Managing Director Thomas Horn.

Dr. Roman Böttger, Chief Operating Officer Ion Technology at HZDR Innovation GmbH, adds to the exhibitor perspective: “We are visiting SEMICON Japan to show how high-energy ion implantation and electron irradiation can decisively support the production of modern power semiconductors. Our services enable reliable material modification of electronic components, making them faster and more energy efficient. At the trade fair, we are looking for a direct exchange with innovators who want to outsource demanding implantation steps. This is how we are shaping the next generation of robust power devices together.”

“Japan has been pursuing an extremely clear and long-term industrial policy for years. The massive investments in the revitalization of its own semiconductor production – from the two TSMC plants in Kumamoto to consortia such as Rapidus and the recent decision to build a new Micron plant – show how consistently the country is focusing on technological sovereignty. The parallel establishment of TSMC in Kumamoto and Saxony underlines the fact that our regions are not opponents in global competition, but strategic allies. Both ecosystems share technologically closely related value chains, comparable competence structures and a high degree of industrial reliability. For Silicon Saxony, the renewed presence at SEMICON Japan is therefore much more than just a trade fair appearance: it reaffirms a decades-long partnership between Saxony and Japan based on mutual trust, innovative strength and economic openness. The growing integration of the two locations is creating new potential for cooperation – from joint R&D activities to direct supply chain relationships between Saxon and Japanese companies. The fact that our exhibitors are presenting solutions with clear relevance for the Japanese market – from fab automation, environmental and wastewater technology to advanced packaging equipment and material processing for power electronics – impressively demonstrates the contribution Saxony can make to industrial transformation in Japan and worldwide,” explains Frank Bösenberg, Managing Director, Silicon Saxony e. V.

16th Fraunhofer Symposium in Sendai

The close links between research and companies in Saxony are also evident at the 16th Fraunhofer Symposium, which will take place in Sendai on 15 December in the run-up to the trade fair. This year’s event, organized by Chemnitz-based Fraunhofer ENAS, Tohoku University and the Silicon Saxony industry cluster, is dedicated to the topic of “Advances in sensor, photon and semiconductor technology and systems”. Top-class specialist lectures and a matchmaking event for direct exchange are planned. Some Saxon exhibitors, such as HZDR Innovation GmbH and Vistec Electron Beam GmbH, will be represented with their own contributions.
