“With NOVA, we are experiencing a new dawn in industrial automation,” says Christian Piechnick, CEO of Wandelbots. “Just as Android revolutionized smartphones and Windows changed the PC world, NOVA will make industrial robotics accessible to everyone and enable new types of commercialization for software developers.”
Carl Doeksen, Global Robotics / Automation Director for Abrasive Systems at 3M, explains: “At 3M, we work with start-ups to expand our innovation model. We are proud to be part of Wandelbots’ journey towards the democratization of robotics. Today, the majority of grinding applications are still done manually. Wandelbots NOVA will lower the barriers for companies to automate such processes. With NOVA, users have access to the necessary process know-how to select the right sanding materials; they can simply enter the parameters for their workpiece and specify the desired end state via a simple user interface. For 3M, NOVA is an opportunity not only to equip end users with the tools they need, but also to make our extensive expertise in process technology more accessible.”
Modern programming languages and vendor independence
Wandelbot’s NOVA is the world’s first vendor-independent operating system for robots, making robotics accessible to everyone. By supporting modern development tools such as Python and JavaScript, NOVA enables millions of developers to easily create and scale robot applications and reduces the complexity of automation. Following a plan, build and operate approach, NOVA simplifies the entire automation lifecycle with AI technologies at its core – from planning and simulation to deployment and scaling – and ensures continuous support at every stage. Thanks to seamless integration with existing hardware, companies can scale to multiple robots and brands without costly retooling. This accelerates projects, reduces costs and increases flexibility.
As a manufacturer-independent operating system, NOVA simplifies and optimizes the complex world of industrial robotics by integrating hardware components from different manufacturers and making them accessible to everyone with a modern interface. This makes complex programming and inflexible automation landscapes a thing of the past. The open API concept, the unique user experience and the seamless integration of externally developed apps make NOVA a versatile platform for both robot users and millions of software developers.
Vendor-specific and outdated programming languages, high operating costs, the lack of skilled workers and closed ecosystems have so far prevented the enormous potential from unfolding – robotics is still a niche topic, especially in medium-sized companies. As a standardized operating system, NOVA will decisively advance robotics by enabling the simple programming and control of robots from different manufacturers without specific specialist knowledge. This reduces operating costs and accelerates innovation processes, while companies are no longer dependent on hard-to-find specialist personnel. NOVA opens up completely new perspectives, especially for medium-sized companies where the degree of automation is currently still in the single-digit percentage range.
An open ecosystem for software developers
Wandelbot’s NOVA is much more than a conventional operating system. It offers a standardized user interface for all robot manufacturers and models. Software developers can access development tools, UI elements, standardized libraries and sample applications via the associated developer portal and use the Python-based programming language “Wandelscript” to develop their own innovative solutions for interacting with robots and share their experiences in the specially initiated community.
A new era of automation
The market launch of NOVA marks a turning point. It opens up new opportunities for companies to make use of automation. In addition, software developers who program apps or websites today can unleash their creativity in an industry that is completely new to them.
How NOVA supports companies
Wandelbots NOVA was developed with four central goals to support companies:
- Encourage revenue growth: Automate processes faster and more reliably.
- Optimize operations: Manage complete robotic automation via a single platform and reduce store floor IT complexity.
- Reduce costs and risks: virtual planning, commissioning and support of automation systems lower the barrier to entry and the risk of unnecessary investments.
- Improved usability: Automation projects with user-friendly front-end applications enable easy interaction between employees and robots.
Tackling labor shortages and simplifying robotics
A key advantage of NOVA is its ability to counteract the growing shortage of qualified robot programmers and workers in production. With intuitive front-end applications and a standardized user interface, NOVA makes it easier than ever for employees to interact with robots without the need for technical knowledge. A modern and standardized programming language also opens up a completely new field of activity for millions of software developers and thus strengthens the innovative power of the industry.
Investment protection thanks to realistic simulation in the digital twin
Future automation systems can be tested for their functionality before expensive hardware is purchased. The integration of Wandelbots NOVA with the NVIDIA Omniverse platform enables developers and operators to create exact digital twins of robots, factories and even moving workpieces that are simulated before real-world use. This seamless integration ensures consistency between the digital twin and the physical automation cell throughout its lifecycle, increasing efficiency and reducing potential errors.
Wandelbots NOVA – the beta phase starts now
