TU Dresden: “Saxony-Taiwan Science Conference” hosted in Taipei and Memorandum of Understanding signed

October 1, 2025. As part of a delegation trip from the Free State of Saxony to Asia, which will continue until October 5, the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) and TUD Rector Prof. Ursula Staudinger hosted the Saxon-Taiwanese Science Conference in Taipei. The conference focused on sustainability perspectives in the semiconductor industry. As part of this conference, the Rector signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TUD and the renowned Taiwanese National Institutes of Applied Research (NIAR) on September 30.

In a subsequent press conference, Prof. Staudinger and Saxony’s Science Minister outlined the key results of the conference:
Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow: “Saxony is the heart of the European semiconductor industry with a unique research environment for chip development, strong and diverse academic training for specialists. This is attractive for major investors, as can be seen from the recent establishment of Taiwan’s largest semiconductor manufacturer TSMC and a strong expansion of capacities at Infineon, GlobalFoundries and other chip companies, among others. As Europe, we need these collaborations in order to survive global competition and regain more technological sovereignty. This requires close relationships between our brightest scientific minds. Thanks to the dedicated work on both sides, this has been achieved excellently within a very short time.”

TUD Rector Prof. Ursula Staudinger: “With this trip to Asia, we want to further strengthen our strategic partnerships in research, transfer and specialist training for microelectronics – especially in semiconductor research and chip design. As a university of excellence, we are delighted to be hosting the Saxony-Taiwan Science Conference in Taipei, where leading representatives from politics, science and industry will discuss the future of semiconductor manufacturing. Here, we contribute our expertise in cutting-edge research as well as our experience in academic education, for example in the Semiconductor Talent Incubation Program Taiwan, which we developed together with TSMC.”

Other stops on the trip to Asia include participation in the celebrations for the Day of German Unity and the 25th anniversary of the German Institute in Taiwan.

In addition, meetings with members and alumni of the Saxon Science Ambassador Program (SSAP) will take place at various stops on the trip: “We are also deepening our alumni network on site and are looking forward to meeting representatives of the renowned Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. In line with our collaborative approach, we are building bridges that sustainably connect research, innovation and the promotion of young talent and make TUD internationally visible,” says the Rector.
