In the 2027 QS World University Rankings, the Technical University of Dresden (TUD) has climbed more than 60 spots to 185th place compared to 2024, continuing its positive trend of recent years.
Rankings reflect only part of a university’s performance. However, they provide important insights into international perception, research strength, networking, and attractiveness to international students and researchers. For TUD, this result confirms its ongoing development as a university of excellence with a strong profile in engineering, the natural sciences, computer science, and future-oriented fields such as microelectronics, artificial intelligence, and data-intensive technologies, as well as its internationalization strategy.
The re-designation as a University of Excellence in 2026, combined with the re-designation of the three existing Clusters of Excellence and the acquisition of two additional ones, further underscores this development.
As early as QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, the TUD’s academic strength had already been demonstrated: In the field of Engineering & Technology—which is particularly important for a technical university—TUD improved by three places compared to the previous year and, at rank 94, is once again among the world’s top 100 universities. The TUD also achieved top rankings in international comparisons in the individual disciplines of Materials Science (35th), Physics (100th), and Civil Engineering (51–100 range).
