TU Dresden: Ground-breaking ceremony for new joint quantum research building of IFW Dresden and TU Dresden

April 2, 2025. On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, Prof. Bernd Büchner, Scientific Director at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden e. V. (IFW Dresden), Juliane Schmidt, Commercial Director of the IFW Dresden, Jan Gerken, Chancellor of the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) and Prof. Alexey Chernikov, researcher at the Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat – Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter (ct.qmat) of the TUD and the University of Würzburg, announced the start of the new research program. Alexey Chernikov, researcher at the Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat – Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter (ct.qmat) of the TUD and the University of Würzburg, gave the go-ahead for the construction of a new joint research building for quantum research with a ground-breaking ceremony. The building with laboratory and office units is being constructed on the corner of Nöthnitzer Straße and Helmholtzstraße.

The ground-breaking ceremony took place in the presence of State Secretary Prof. Heike Graßmann (SMWK), Dresden’s Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert and Falk Reinhardt, Technical Managing Director at Staatsbetrieb Sächsisches Immobilien- und Baumanagement (SIB). Construction is due to be completed by 2029. The construction costs borne by the Free State of Saxony and the federal government amount to around 70 million euros.

Juliane Schmidt, Commercial Director of IFW Dresden:

“Today’s ground-breaking ceremony marks the start of a pioneering construction project that is only possible thanks to the close and constructive collaboration with the Free State of Saxony, the state capital Dresden, TU Dresden and our dedicated project team. Together, we are creating a modern, functional and attractive working environment that will offer our researchers the best conditions for their scientific work. I would like to thank everyone involved for their trust and support.”

Jan Gerken, Chancellor of the TUD:

“With this joint research center, the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden and the TUD are sending a visible signal of the strength of Dresden as a top research location and, in particular, the outstanding quality of quantum research in Saxony. At the same time, this project illustrates how we are jointly developing promising new construction models. The role of IFW Dresden as the client representative of the Free State of Saxony represents an innovative approach to the construction of this new research building. In close cooperation between the TUD and our partners in the Free State of Saxony, the City of Dresden and the DRESDEN-concept Science and Innovation Campus, we are developing tomorrow’s excellent research infrastructure today.”

Matthias Vojta, Professor of Theoretical Solid State Physics at TU Dresden and Dresden spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat:

“The cutting-edge research of ct.qmat in Dresden thrives on the fruitful connection to non-university research institutions. We are delighted that the collaboration with the IFW will be even closer thanks to the new research building. Here, our newly appointed professors will research quantum phenomena and produce materials that could be crucial for future technologies. Ideas that will significantly advance our research will also be generated in the stairwell or during coffee breaks.”

Joint research center for active research exchange

The new joint building with laboratory and office units will primarily serve as a center for quantum materials and research into new semiconductor technologies. It unites the TUD’s Cluster of Excellence “Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter” (ct.qmat) and the IFW Dresden under one roof. Shared laboratories, communication areas and short distances will enable even closer interdisciplinary collaboration between the two institutions on common topics in the future. The new joint building will thus become a place for cutting-edge international research into quantum materials.

The new laboratory complex will provide 5,100 square meters of usable space for laboratories and offices as well as more than 3,000 square meters of technical and traffic areas. Around 150 employees will find their new workplace here. Connected to the main building will be a communal service yard with supply facilities.

The modern research building was designed by the project planning office AWB Architekten GmbH. The design is characterized by a sustainable and space-efficient overall concept in the dynamic research landscape on Campus South. To the south, the construction site on Nöthnitzer Straße borders the so-called Südpark – the area that will be developed by the state capital of Dresden as the site of the Federal Garden Show from 2033.

The foundation stone for the new building is due to be laid next fall. Final completion is currently scheduled for mid-2029.
