Both Clever Cloud and SpiNNcloud point out that although artificial intelligence is growing rapidly, it is failing in the wider industry primarily due to the high cost of computing power. According to the companies, the current generation of SpiNNcloud systems already reduces the cost of certain computations by a factor of 17. The next architecture, called SpiNNNext, is expected to significantly increase this efficiency even further and enable savings of up to 80 times – a technological breakthrough that should significantly advance the widespread introduction and industrialization of AI in Europe.
German-French cooperation in the field of AI infrastructure
Clever Cloud and SpiNNcloud see their collaboration as part of a Franco-German AI axis. Both sides emphasize that only closer cooperation between European providers can enable a long-term competitive and sovereign AI infrastructure. The partnership will not be limited to the two companies. Clever Cloud and SpiNNcloud plan to involve other innovative small and medium-sized companies from Europe. The aim is to create a network of highly specialized companies that provide central digital capabilities without being dependent on non-European infrastructures.
Clever Cloud, based in France, operates its own cloud platform for hosting, automation, databases and orchestration. All software is developed in-house and operations take place in Europe. Clever Cloud employs around 100 people in Europe and claims to be active in more than 120 countries. SpiNNcloud Systems, based in Dresden, develops brain-inspired computer architectures for high-performance computing and AI applications. The company currently markets systems based on the SpiNNaker2 architecture and is working on the next generation, SpiNNNext. This is intended to significantly improve the energy efficiency of AI computing processes even further.
The collaboration between the two companies has already reached the operational phase. The first SpiNNcloud systems are being integrated into Clever Cloud’s infrastructure. Technical tests and validations are currently underway. The partners are developing two application lines. On the one hand, the high efficiency of the SpiNNcloud systems is to be used directly for computing-intensive tasks. Secondly, the teams are working on a joint layer for Token as a Service. This layer should enable industrial companies to obtain AI services such as language models or other algorithms as a consumption-based service. Energy consumption and costs per computing unit should be significantly lower than in today’s infrastructures. The engineering teams of the two companies have coordinated the roadmap for integration, security and operation. The companies believe that this will enable them to provide industrial users in Europe with predictable cost structures and clear efficiency gains.
The use of proprietary European technologies for hardware and cloud operations will drive the development of an independent AI infrastructure. After the summit in Berlin, both companies want to continue their exchange with government circles in France, Germany and at EU level. The aim is to contribute the experience gained from the collaboration to political debates on AI infrastructure, energy efficiency and digital sovereignty. Both companies will use the European summit between President Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor Merz in Berlin for talks with the government delegations present.
Quentin Adam, CEO of Clever Cloud, commented on the announcement: “We want a Europe that develops its own technologies and shapes its own digital future. Together with SpiNNcloud, we are proving that the European industry not only has the know-how, but is also determined to tackle the pressing challenges in the field of artificial intelligence: Cost, energy consumption and sovereignty. This partnership makes it clear that if we work together in Europe, we can create powerful, energy-efficient and truly independent AI infrastructures – for our companies and our common future.”
Hector Gonzalez, CEO of SpiNNcloud, added: “With Clever Cloud, we have found the ideal partner to bring the unique energy efficiency of our brain-inspired systems directly to industrial applications. This Franco-German cooperation shows that Europe not only has the technological building blocks, but can also combine them to create competitive, sovereign solutions.”
About SpiNNcloud
SpiNNcloud is committed to reinventing AI infrastructures: The company is redefining efficiency standards with a computing architecture consistently based on the biological model of the brain. The event-driven processing principle – calculations are only carried out when required and only for relevant data – opens up previously unattainable efficiency reserves without any loss of performance. SpiNNcloud delivers complete brain-inspired systems to research institutions and companies worldwide, paving a fundamentally new path: scalable, sustainable and designed to meet the requirements of future intelligent systems.
