September 4, 2026. Starting this fall, Saxony will fund at least 46 new STEP early-career research groups at universities in Saxony. This will enable young researchers to conduct research for two years on topics in the fields of digital, environmentally friendly, and resource-efficient technologies, as well as biotechnology.

This will enable them to further develop their skills for the Saxon job market. To this end, the Saxon Ministry of Science is providing more than 60 million euros in European funding.
Saxony’s Minister of Science, Sebastian Gemkow: “Saxony is one of Europe’s leading centers for science and innovation. To maintain and expand this position, it is essential that both the business sector and the scientific community have access to a sufficient number of qualified professionals. Early-career research groups represent a success story for cohesion policy in Saxony. They combine higher education with securing a highly skilled workforce for the state. This final round of the current funding period, under the STEP initiative, also places additional emphasis on promoting strategic technologies in Saxony.”
Young researchers’ groups are part of the “ESF Plus Directive 2021–2027: Higher Education and Research” issued by the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture, and Tourism (SMWK) and are funded by the EU and the state. In light of the growing shortage of skilled workers, the SMWK is thus supporting projects at universities. The current funding, based on the EU’s STEP Regulation (Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform), also helps reduce Europe’s strategic dependencies and sustainably strengthen Saxony as a hub for science and business. STEP early-career research groups, each consisting of 4 to 12 people, are funded, which are specifically designed to strengthen the European Union’s competitiveness and technological sovereignty while providing Saxony with a supply of qualified professionals.
