International technology companies such as Amazon, Huawei, IBM or SAP with their respective development centers have long appreciated Saxony as a business location. While highly skilled IT experts at the Amazon Development Center Germany (ADCG) are working on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), the Huawei German Research Center supports the software development of new operating systems that are needed, for example, for IoT devices and Industry 4.0. SAP, being one of the world’s leading suppliers of software for the management of business processes, integrates AI technology with the highest ethical, safety and data protection standards.
German technologies as a key to success
Leading German companies such as secunet, and many highly specialized system experts, e.g., Cyberus Technology, Kernkonzept or SCONTAIN, also help shape the innovative ecosystem. secunet is Germany’s leading cybersecurity company, specializing in areas with particularly high security requirements, such as Cloud computing, IIoT, eGovernment, and eHealth. The experts at Cyberus Technology are excel at combining virtualization and German engineering skill, e.g., in the field of low-level software development and test automation. Kernkonzept provides the L4Re Operating System, which is approved for classified information up to the level “VS GEHEIM” (classified as secret) and offers the highest level of protection for confidential data in the Cloud, sensitive networks, and in smart home applications, cars or planes, providing an important pillar for digital sovereignty. Scontain is one of the leading companies in the field of confidential data processing that develops sustainable IT security solutions for their customers based on their own software platform SCONE.
Vast research expertise
The vast research expertise available in Saxony, e.g., the Chair of Operating Systems at the Dresden University of Technology and the Barkhausen Institute, also provides important impulses for the ecosystem. They do research at three interfaces: digital processors and operating systems, radio transmission for communication between devices and for tracking, and on digital tools for the design of trustworthy electronics and software.
In addition, various partners such as the Computer Security Division of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in Freital support the stakeholders. The BSI is an interdisciplinary center of competence for questions of information security, and a designer of a safe digital transformation in Germany whose professional expertise is acknowledged on both the national and the international level.
Attractive study and training opportunities
In light of the growing demand for skilled labor, Saxony is continuously expanding its study and training opportunities, e.g., in the Chair of Data Privacy and Security at Leipzig University. For example, the students study the use of machine learning techniques to train firewall rules or intrusion detection systems, and the de-anonymization of sensor data.
This diversified expertise ensures that Saxon companies and institutions are attractive partners in the fields of operating systems and cybersecurity.
