Cloud migration projects often without strategy

The migration of applications to the cloud is a central element of digital transformation. Accordingly, more and more companies are focusing precisely on this as part of their digitization efforts. However, one sticking point in the “cloudification” of applications, according to the current study results, is the initial strategy development: currently, around 60% of the companies surveyed are still carrying out cloud migration projects without a pre-developed strategy. After all, almost nine out of ten companies want to change this in the future. The lack of a strategy is possibly one reason why only 39% have so far carried out at least one cloud migration project. The evaluated data also show that the active implementation of a migration to the cloud depends on both the functional areas and the size of the company. Only 30% of functional areas are implementing a cloud strategy to date. As a rule, large companies with more than 1,000 employees are usually further along in implementing a cloud strategy than medium-sized and small companies.

As part of the Cloud Migration 2023 study, a total of 321 people in senior management positions from companies in the DACH region were surveyed. These included C-level managers, specialist departments and IT experts from various sectors and industries. One focus was on the IT industry, companies from the mechanical and plant engineering sector and the life sciences sector.

“Cloud solutions are an excellent alternative in the modern IT world, but changes to the IT landscape remain a complex task even with the cloud. In this respect, a structured approach is imperative for success. We advise our customers on the development of an individual cloud strategy. In order for this to be implemented effectively, the choice of the right technology and infrastructure is crucial,” explains Ulrich Meine, Head of Hyperscaler Engagement at NTT DATA Business Solutions.

According to the study, effective collaboration and communication between IT and the affected business units in the company is also crucial for a successful cloud migration. In addition, there is the factor of security of corporate data, which must be strictly controlled at every step: 68 out of 100 respondents attribute a very important role to IT security in cloud migration. Despite some challenges, cloud migration is already in the planning phase for many of the companies surveyed, as the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages for them.

Companies have a positive attitude towards the cloud

In principle, as the study also makes clear, companies hardly associate any fears with the step into the cloud. As the most important goals of the migration, they name an expected digitization boost and cost reductions through accelerated processes. The fact that cost reductions are fundamentally a strong driver of digital transformation was also recently shown by the international Transformation Study 2023, which was published by NTT DATA Business Solutions AG and its subsidiary Natuvion.

“Progressive digitization and challenging economic conditions demand a lot from companies and their IT infrastructures,” says Ulrich Kreitz, Managing Director of Business Unit Germany and Head of Managed Services at NTT DATA Business Solutions. “We offer our customers neutral advice on hosting as well as private and public cloud structures. In doing so, we develop a targeted mix of standardization and customization that enables companies to flexibly design their business processes while keeping cost efficiency, IT security and compliance in focus.”
