Mission: Driving the economy forward.

We comprise just under 70,000 member companies, of which around 350 business owners represent their region and sector on our committees. In addition, there are over 1,800 volunteer auditors.

Tasks and objectives:

The regional Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHKs) represent the collective interests of their members vis-à-vis local authorities and state governments, politicians and the public. The aim of all activities is to promote the regional commercial economy across all sectors.

We at the Leipzig Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) see ourselves as a service provider and advocate for all member companies and their sectors; we strike a balance between different interests. This makes us an important voice for the region’s small and medium-sized enterprises. Statutory membership ensures objectivity towards all members.

The three pillars:

Representation of interests
We are consulted during the democratic negotiation process for draft laws and regulations relevant to the economy. We also act as expert advisers on economic matters for courts and public authorities. Our expertise is based, amongst other things, on surveys of companies and consultations within specialist committees.

Public authority functions
The state has entrusted the regional Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHKs) with specific public authority tasks, such as organising practical vocational training, including responsibility for final examinations. In addition, we appoint experts, certify documents relating to foreign trade and provide opinions on urban land-use planning. We also grant licences to act as insurance intermediaries and maintain the registers for intermediaries dealing with insurance, financial investments and property loans.

Services for the business community
We support businesses and start-ups with practical advice and services. This is complemented by stock market services, the provision of legal information, and details on economic structures and company data. Our objectives are to create more training opportunities and jobs, as well as to establish more business-friendly framework conditions regarding taxes and levies.

Another key focus is the development of regional infrastructure. Through regional initiatives, we support key processes aimed at securing a positive future for our region. The Leipzig Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) is one of 79 German Chambers of Industry and Commerce. Our umbrella organisation is the German Association of Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) in Berlin. Together with a representative office in Brussels, this ensures a direct link to the various political and social institutions of the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union.
