Studying without borders
The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences has existed in the tri-border region of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic since 1992. Like hardly any other university, it stands for change and transformation. Due to its location, the HSZG is a bridge between Central and Eastern Europe. The topic of energy has been in its DNA since its foundation. And the transformation of the economy, work and society can hardly be better researched in Germany than in Upper Lusatia.
At the heart of Europe, students are researching solutions for the future. They find perfect conditions: first-class supervision, no overcrowding in lecture halls, modern laboratories and technical equipment, exciting research projects and internships, international exchange, short distances, affordable rents and a lovely region. Here, students can feel comfortable and achieve their potential. They research highly topical issues and, well equipped as problem solvers, improve our world.
To ensure that the university remains fit for the future, it is constantly developing. Green engineering, health campus and the continuing education campus are just three buzzwords in the extensive University for Future process. Our approximately 500 employees, students and professors are helping to shape the “university of the future”.
Well connected internationally
Our students, but also our teaching staff, benefit from a wide range of exchange opportunities and get to know other languages and cultures intensively. The International Office in Zittau and Görlitz organizes our international contacts. They also provide advice on international exchange programs such as ERASMUS+ and internships abroad.
There are partnerships with a number of international universities and business institutions. The HSZG is a member of three networks to foster international cooperation: the Baltic University Programme consists of 225 universities and research institutions in the countries of the Baltic Sea region. Funding is provided for courses, conferences, research projects and summer schools at bachelor's and master's level. The focus is on topics of sustainability, democracy and environmental protection.
The HSZG is also a member of the Chinese-German University of Applied Sciences (CDHAW). Students of mechatronics or industrial engineering have the opportunity to participate in the CDHAW program of Tongji University and the consortium of German universities. The Indo-German Center for Higher Education (IGCHE), on the other hand, is an association of Indian and German universities. Students from both cultures gain intensive insights into the study and economic systems of their host countries.
Applied research
Whether the focus is on optimizing power plant processes and automation technology, biotechnology, specific surface properties for high-voltage fittings or regional social development processes, the expertise of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is well known and in demand among partner institutions in business and society as well as among researchers.
Three research priorities shape the HSZG. In addition to energy and the environment, as well as transformation processes in the economy and society, it specializes in materials, structures and surfaces. Five university institutes conduct research in these fields. Close connections to local medium-sized companies and large corporations in Germany and abroad ensure a permanent transfer of knowledge into practice. This proximity to real life pays off when starting a career. The high placement rates of our graduates prove it.
