About this member
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) conducts cutting-edge, long-term research in the fields of energy, health and matter. We face up to the great challenges of our time and see it as our task to provide knowledge and technology for the next generations. From this we derive four core points as our mission:
- We research fundamental phenomena of nature. Unique research infrastructures provide insight into processes under extreme conditions. We contribute our know-how to the development of future materials and information technologies as a guarantor for an enlightened and free society.
- We contribute to a healthy society with innovative diagnostic and therapeutic methods in cancer research - from the basics in the natural and life sciences to medical applications.
- We are helping to shape the transition to a sustainable industry and the transformation of energy systems towards a green society.
- We strengthen Saxony as a business location in Germany through a systemic combination of basic research, innovation, large-scale equipment and transfer, thus ensuring an appropriate standard of living for future generations
We are an open-minded, interdisciplinary, international research center for application-oriented basic research with a modern welcoming culture. To answer scientific questions, the HZDR uses large-scale equipment with unique experimental facilities that are also available to external users. A total of around 1,500 people are employed at the main campus in Dresden and at the Freiberg, Leipzig, Schenefeld (near Hamburg) and Grenoble/France sites.
We cooperate with industrial partners and clinics, license technologies to companies or found companies so that our research can be put to use quickly. We also pass on knowledge and expertise through the joint use of our research facilities, the provision of data or consulting services. The “Technology Transfer and Innovation” department brings together all of the Center's key transfer competencies and support services - from patent and innovation management to contract management and technology marketing.
The Institute for Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research conducts materials research for future applications in information technology and the energy sector, among others. In doing so, the HZDR uses the diverse possibilities of applying ion beams to synthesise, modify and analyse thin films and nanostructures. The materials studied range from semiconductors and oxides to metals and magnetic materials. These are analysed and optimised in terms of their electronic, magnetic, optical and structural functionality. The research topics are oriented towards potential applications in the field of nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, spintronics, as well as photovoltaics.
For industrial and commercial ion beam services, the HZDR’s transfer company, HZDR Innovation GmbH, offers fast and direct access to the accelerators on the basis of individual contracts. For the business field of ion technology, HZDR Innovation uses the facilities of the Ion Beam Centre at HZDR. Since the end of 2021, there has been a second production site in Slovakia. The many years of expertise in the field of ion technology, modern and powerful machines and highly qualified personnel enable rapid processing of standard implantations while maintaining high quality standards. Our strengths include the wide ion energy range, a large selection of available ion species and the fulfilment of complex special orders.
