“GaN is ready for the market and is gaining significant momentum in numerous industries,” says Johannes Schoiswohl, Head of the GaN Systems business unit at Infineon. “We deliver added value to our customers quickly and efficiently. Our product-to-system approach, combined with leading manufacturing expertise and a broad GaN portfolio, allows us to offer tailor-made solutions for successful market launches. We want to further strengthen Infineon as a trusted partner that guides customers safely through the complexity of GaN and unlocks the full potential of this technology.”
Analysts expect the market for GaN power semiconductors to grow to almost three billion dollars by 2030 – an increase of around 400 percent compared to 2025 [1]. This growth will be driven by the production ramp-ups that have been underway since 2025, which will expand GaN adaptation into many industries and open up new applications. A compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 44 percent is forecast for the period 2025 to 2030 [2]; sales are expected to reach 920 million US dollars in 2026, which corresponds to an increase of 58 percent compared to 2025 [3].
Progress in GaN product innovation
By 2026, developers will open up additional fields of application for GaN bidirectional switches (BDS) beyond solar inverters and on-board chargers for electric vehicles. Infineon’s high-voltage GaN bidirectional switches (HV BDS) utilize a revolutionary common drain design with a double-gate structure based on proven Gate Injection Transistor (GIT) technology. This architecture uses the same drift region for blocking in both directions and significantly reduces the die area compared to conventional back-to-back arrangements. For example, microinverters with Infineon’s CoolGaN™ BDS and switching frequencies up to 1 MHz enable 40 percent more power in the same package while reducing system costs.
GaN technology opens up new applications
GaN is making inroads into numerous areas – from AI data centers and robotics to electric vehicles, renewable energy, digital health applications and quantum computing. In data centers, GaN-based power supplies with new topologies achieve unprecedented efficiencies and power densities, reduce losses by up to 30 percent and enable more efficient, compact architectures. GaN-based motor drives in humanoid robots can be up to 40 percent smaller and improve fine motion control.
Why Infineon and Infineon GaN?
Infineon is recognized as the global leader in power semiconductors for innovative solutions based on silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC) and GaN. Infineon’s integrated device manufacturing (IDM) strategy and industry-leading system understanding enable it to develop leading-edge technologies to meet the evolving needs of the industry. Driven by GaN wafer production at 300 millimeters, Infineon’s GaN products deliver outstanding performance with clear application benefits. As examples:
- The new CoolGaN Transistor 650-V-G5 generation features a Figure of Merit (product of conduction and switching losses) that is 30 to 40 percent better than the industry average – for significantly higher system performance and more design options.
- The innovative CoolGaN Transistor MV-G5 products monolithically integrate a Schottky diode and achieve 15 percent lower losses and over 10 percent lower device temperatures – reducing size and cost with higher efficiency and reliability.
- As the world’s leading automotive semiconductor manufacturer, Infineon’s new CoolGaN Automotive 100 V product addresses the transition from 12 V to 48 V vehicle electrical systems; the component meets the strict requirements of the AEC Q101 standard.
With a broad portfolio of over 50 GaN products – from discrete to highly integrated solutions, from 40 V to 700 V on the voltage side – for consumer, industrial and automotive applications, Infineon offers comprehensive solutions for a wide range of power applications.
GaN continues its rise in power electronics in 2026 – driven by superior performance, efficiency and reliability. As a leader in the GaN market, Infineon is helping its customers and partners shape this new era and develop the energy-efficient technologies of tomorrow.
