“An uninterruptible power supply for AI systems is critical for process continuity and smooth operation,” says Adam White, Division President Power & Sensor Systems at Infineon. “Our energy-efficient battery backup systems are designed to keep AI servers running with exceptional performance, flexibility and efficiency, meeting the varying power requirements of AI servers. By mastering all three relevant semiconductor materials, silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), we expect Infineon’s semiconductor solutions to set a new standard for powering AI data centers.”
Impacts or system failures in AI data centers can be extraordinarily costly: 41 percent of companies surveyed in a 2024 ITIC survey reported losses of one to over five million dollars per hour of downtime. 35 percent of these outages are attributed to problems with the quality of power supply components. Infineon’s Partial Power Converter (PPC), a semiconductor solution for improving the performance and reliability of power systems, is one of the leading technologies for battery backup systems.
The mid-range 5.5kW BBU is characterized by a topology developed by Infineon that integrates Si and GaN technologies and offers extremely high efficiency and high power density. The industry’s first 12kW system combines multiple 4kW power converter boards with Infineon’s PSOC™ microcontrollers, 40V and 80V OptiMOS™ and EiceDRIVER™ gate drivers, enabling best-in-class performance and flexibility and achieving 400 percent higher power density than the industry average. Higher performance levels can be achieved by connecting multiple cards in parallel on one motherboard. This allows for easy scalability and simplified maintenance. If one card fails, the system continues to operate with reduced capacity. This minimizes downtime and ensures high reliability. This modular approach allows the system to be tailored to specific performance requirements. This eliminates the need for a complete system redesign and provides customers with significant benefits in terms of performance and reliability.
In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the latest BBU technology, Infineon is developing complete system demonstrators for its battery backup solutions. The demonstrators show the benefits of PPC technology in real-world applications and provide a clear path to the next generation of AI data centers.
More details on Infineon’s battery backup technology will be presented at APEC 2025 (March 16-20). More information is available on the BBU page.
