IBM Technology Campus – a marketplace of ideas
Located within sight of the existing IBM Quantum Data Center in Ehningen, Baden-Württemberg, the IBM Technology Campus combines the IBM headquarters and the research and development site and will also house the newly designed IBM Innovation Studio under one roof.
A total of 3,500 modern and collaborative workpoints will be available in the four buildings for IBM employees, partners and companies.
Federal Minister for Digital and State Modernization Dr. Karsten Wildberger: “The new IBM Technology Campus is a strong signal for Germany as a location for innovation. IBM stands for technological excellence and global networking like almost no other company. With this center for AI, quantum computing and cloud technology, a place is being created where the future is being shaped. Such investments strengthen our digital innovation power and ensure competitiveness and prosperity. I am delighted to be here today, where digitalization and progress are visibly growing together.”
Deputy Minister President and Minister of the Interior, for Digitalization and Communities of the State of Baden-Württemberg, Thomas Strobl: “The opening of the new IBM Germany headquarters in Ehningen demonstrates IBM’s confidence in Baden-Württemberg as a business and technology location. This underlines the attractiveness of our state for innovative companies and shows that we offer good conditions for research, development and digital innovations. No other state in Germany invests as much money in research and development as Baden-Württemberg. We are innovation drivers, innovation leaders – and companies like IBM make a significant contribution to this.”
Wolfgang Wendt, Managing Director IBM Deutschland GmbH and General Manager DACH: “Our new IBM Technology Campus in Ehningen underlines the importance of Germany as a technology location for IBM and our deep commitment to the region. With 115 years of presence in the German market, we will continue to contribute to the digital autonomy and well-being of this country with our resilient architectures, sovereign AI and hybrid cloud approach. We also have a strong research and development component here, with labs and quantum computers, local cloud data centers and billions of dollars in additional planned investments through 2030. IBM is also building the workforce of tomorrow, with a comprehensive range of training courses and close collaboration with universities and vocational academies.”
Modern architecture for collaborative working
The campus was designed by architecture firm Kadawittfeldarchitektur, with the interior architecture meeting IBM’s workplace standards and designed by architecture firm Ippolito Fleitz Group. Both firms are internationally recognized for their outstanding work and have received numerous awards.
The campus buildings are arranged entirely around a central marketplace with open spaces and recreational zones. This vibrant hub encourages collaboration between employees from research and development, consulting, sales and the staff and administrative functions and enables the exchange of ideas in a dynamic and flexible working environment. The new building offers adaptable areas for different operational requirements, interconnected walkways and green spaces that create a modern, inspiring and pleasant working environment.
IBM Think on Tour
This year’s IBM Think on Tour technology fair was the first event to stop at the new IBM Technology Campus on the opening day. High-profile decision-makers from business and the public sector learned how they can exploit the full potential of artificial intelligence, quantum computing and hybrid cloud.
IBM: Rooted in Germany for 115 years
The new IBM Technology Campus and the associated investments underline the company’s deep roots in Germany and the region. IBM was founded on November 30, 1910 as Deutsche Hollerith-Maschinen Gesellschaft in Berlin-Charlottenburg. It was initially a licensee of The Tabulating Machine Company for machines for processing punched cards. Since then, IBM has developed into a driving force in the country’s information technology, with major research and development centers in Germany. For over 70 years, the company has been present with its research and development site in the Stuttgart and Böblingen area. IBM’s local commitment ranges from major research contributions to IBM’s mainframe, close collaborations with the German research community, local development of trusted AI and machine learning solutions, as well as the commissioning of the first IBM quantum computer in Europe in 2021 and the opening of the first IBM Quantum Data Center outside the US in 2024.
