GlobalFoundries: Coal workers are trained for semiconductor production – GlobalFoundries and LEAG drive structural change in Saxony and Lusatia

December 8, 2025. GlobalFoundries (GF) and Lausitz Energie Bergbau AG (LEAG) announced a strategic cooperation on December 8 that marks a decisive step in the structural transformation of the traditional coal mining region of Saxony and Lusatia. As part of a pilot project, ten LEAG employees will be transferred to GlobalFoundries for three months, where they will be trained specifically for work in semiconductor production. Participation in the test run is voluntary for the energy workers and is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2026

The partnership goes far beyond a mere personnel measure: it is a targeted response to the challenges of structural change. The aim is to secure the future viability of the region by maintaining regional value creation and giving employees new prospects in the high-tech sector. At the same time, GF is meeting the growing demand for skilled workers by specifically integrating and further developing the technical and industrial expertise of LEAG employees. Both companies thus benefit from a transfer of knowledge and expertise – added value that also supports sustainable development in eastern Germany.

From structural change to a region of the future

The cooperation also fulfills a clear social responsibility: in view of the loss of jobs in the lignite sector, it offers new opportunities in a key industry of the future. This ensures social stability and can serve as a model project for sustainable economic transformation in other regions. The switch from traditional industrial jobs to high-tech jobs strengthens the region and sends a signal for the success of joint solutions in structural change.

Nancy Stadel, Director HR Management at GlobalFoundries Dresden, explains: “We are delighted to be working with LEAG to create an example of successful transformation and regional responsibility. The change from mining to high-tech jobs is a major challenge for many colleagues, but also a real opportunity. Our industry relies on a committed, technically skilled workforce – and we are convinced that LEAG employees will successfully shape this change with their knowledge, experience and willingness to embrace change.”

Jörg Waniek, Chief Human Resources Officer at LEAG, adds: “For us, people are at the center of everything we do. The pilot project with GlobalFoundries is a clear signal that we are actively supporting our employees on their path to a new professional future. The semiconductor industry offers attractive prospects, and with targeted training we are jointly creating the basis for the long-term success of our skilled workers and the entire region.”

With this partnership, GF and LEAG are making a significant contribution to developing Lusatia and Saxony as model regions for structural change. By 2038, the phase-out of lignite is expected to create thousands of new jobs and safeguard existing ones – also thanks to innovative industrial concepts such as this one.
