European Commission: Commission launches call for project proposals on AI worth over 307 million euros

January 15, 2026. The EU is investing €307.3 million in artificial intelligence and emerging and enabling technologies through two new calls for project proposals in the Horizon Europe research program. With this investment, the Commission aims to ensure leadership in strategic technologies through sustainable, human-centered innovation. The deadline for applications is April 15, 2026.

Developing trustworthy AI services

A total of €221.8 million has been earmarked for an initiative focused on developing trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) services, innovative data services and securing the EU’s strategic autonomy. The funds will be used to finance projects that contribute to the development of AI, including measures to support the AI application strategy , robotics, quantum technologies, photonics and virtual worlds. Over €40 million for the “Open Internet Stack Initiative” will develop both end-user applications and technologies within the stack to support Europe’s sovereign digital commons. 

Strategic autonomy in technologies and raw materials

An additional €85.5 million is available for the second call, which will support open strategic autonomy in the areas of digital and emerging technologies and raw materials. The focus will be on topics such as next-generation AI agents, robotics for industrial and service applications and the development of new materials with enhanced sensing capabilities.

Background

The fourth cluster in the Horizon Europe work program , “Digital, Industry and Space”, aims to strengthen Europe’s leadership and competitiveness in key strategic digital sectors such as AI, quantum, future digital networks, virtual worlds and other key technologies. The calls are aimed at companies, public administrations, universities and other institutions from EU Member States and partner countries.
