Dresden: Silicon Saxony needs strong schools – Joint declaration of intent signed to expand international education programs

September 22, 2025. Dresden is rapidly developing into a leading European location for microelectronics and the semiconductor industry. The region, also known as “Silicon Saxony”, is increasingly attracting international specialists and their families. In addition to career prospects, it is above all the living and educational conditions that determine whether these skilled workers settle in Dresden permanently.

In order to meet the increasing demand for high-quality, internationally recognized educational opportunities, the Free State of Saxony and the state capital of Dresden signed a joint declaration of intent today, 22 September 2025, to introduce the Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Bertolt Brecht Gymnasium.

The MYP is an internationally recognized educational programme of the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) based in Switzerland. It is aimed at students in grades 6 to 10 and complements the existing IB Diploma Program (IB-DP) in the upper secondary school at Bertolt-Brecht-Gymnasium.

“With this declaration of intent, we are sending a clear signal: Anyone who works in Saxony should also be able to have their children educated at an internationally high level – and in a public school,” emphasizes Minister of Education Conrad Clemens.

The plan is to start the MYP with a 6th grade in the 2027/28 school year. A preparatory year 5 will also facilitate entry into the program. From 2027, the Bertolt-Brecht-Gymnasium will thus become the first public grammar school in Saxony to offer international education from year 5 to 12.

First Mayor Jan Donhauser emphasized the importance of the project for the entire location: “Dresden not only stands for high-tech and innovation, but also for quality of life and future prospects. A strong international school offer is an inseparable part of this. It is a key factor in welcoming families from all over the world here.”

The Bertolt-Brecht-Gymnasium has the best prerequisites for this: It already has many years of experience with international education programs and a dedicated faculty that fills these programs with life.

“We are delighted to be able to expand our international profile to include the MYP. Despite valuable experience with our many multilingual children, establishing an international class with English as the lingua franca will be a major challenge for our teachers. However, the children in this class will certainly feel at home in the very international atmosphere of our school,” says principal Marcello Meschke.

With the introduction of the IB Middle Years Program, the Free State and the state capital of Dresden are consistently expanding their position as an attractive educational location for international specialists.

In a globally networked working world, excellent education is no longer a “nice-to-have”, but a hard location factor. The fact that a public grammar school like the Bertolt-Brecht-Gymnasium is following this path shows that Dresden is serious about openness, internationality and the future.
