What is KATESIP about?
We are developing a prototype for a secure software supply chain at KATESIP together with D3TN GmbH as our technology partner, who are contributing their expertise and the space-proven ÎĽD3TN protocol stack. Other partner companies are involved as future users, while Cloud&Heat Technologies is contributing its expertise in cloud infrastructures, container platforms and Kubernetes to seamlessly integrate D3TN’s basic technology into modern on-premises environments and cloud infrastructures with special requirements.
The focus is on the Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) protocols, in particular D3TN’s Bundle Protocol, which also plays a central role in ESA’s planned “Solar System Internet”. These technologies were developed for communication under extreme conditions – high error rates, long latencies, communication link failures – and offer particular potential for air-gapped infrastructures in which safety, resilience and isolation requirements have the highest priority.
Our goal
With KATESIP, we enable software updates to be securely transferred to completely isolated, highly critical environments – via unidirectional communication channels, i.e. without a return channel. ÎĽD3TN ensures delay- and disruption-tolerant transmission, while Kubernetes, as the orchestrating platform, distributes the updates automatically and rolls them out directly in the target environment. This allows updates to be provided efficiently, compliantly and securely – especially for critical infrastructures, administration, finance, healthcare or defense.
Our vision
A new service that supports operators of such environments in deploying updates efficiently, compliantly and securely – without dependencies on the internet and without time-consuming manual processes. The special thing about it is that the solution is highly innovative, as it harnesses the latest space technologies for secure software provision in air-gapped IT infrastructures.
Why this is important
Air-gapped environments protect particularly sensitive applications from cyber attacks. At the same time, they present operators with major challenges when it comes to updates, upgrades or the operation of modern cloud infrastructures. This is exactly where KATESIP comes in – and uses space technologies to solve a real problem on Earth.
We are still looking for more partners
For the next project phase, we are looking for more partners who would like to develop practical use cases with us or test our solution early on – especially from the areas of critical infrastructures, public administration, defense, healthcare or finance.
