BSI President Claudia Plattner: “Digitalization is becoming the linchpin of a massively changing world – with impacts and interactions on rules of coexistence, politics, power and state interests. Germany and Europe need a strong response to this. I am therefore extremely pleased that, with Schwarz Digits, we now have a partner at our side with whom we can drive forward digitalization in our country in a targeted and strategic manner and at the same time secure it: Through innovative, high-performance products with contemporary security and sovereignty features from which the state, economy and society can benefit equally. This is a big and important step on the way to a resilient cyber nation Germany.”

Dr. Karsten Wildberger, Federal Minister for Digital and State Modernization: “Germany is on the move – visibly, measurably and with increasing speed. The partnership between the Federal Office for Information Security and Schwarz Digits is a strong signal of German innovative strength and European capacity to act. When government security expertise meets cutting-edge industrial know-how, sovereign cloud solutions are created that make our administration more modern, faster and more secure. This is how we strengthen our independence. Digital sovereignty is the key to future viability – and therefore to security, freedom and prosperity.”

Rolf Schumann, Co-CEO of Schwarz Digits: “True digital freedom can only be achieved through control over one’s own data and systems. We see this partnership as a clear signal for a digitally sovereign Europe that resolutely defends its values in cyberspace too.”

Christian Müller, Co-CEO of Schwarz Digits: “Our technological response is based on the consistent development of technical control layers and the implementation of the zero trust principle. We create interoperability through open source technologies in order to permanently rule out a technical vendor lock-in for the administration.”

For the BSI, digital sovereignty means creating options: The more trustworthy products are available, the more sovereign decisions can be made depending on the usage scenario. From the BSI’s point of view, switching providers must become faster and easier in this context. This can be achieved through a combination of uniform security standards and high interoperability requirements.

In order to achieve digital sovereignty, the BSI is pursuing a dual strategy: on the one hand, the European market and the local digital industry must be strengthened and, on the other, non-European products must be adapted and embedded in such a way that secure and self-determined use is possible. The BSI therefore maintains cooperation agreements with both European and non-European providers. These do not include any award or implementation decisions.
