Robert Habeck, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, commented: “The Manufacturing-X industrial initiative is an important lever for the digital transformation of industry. For example, it is about making production more efficient and industrial supply chains more resilient through close cooperation on data. In this way, German industry can move from being a factory supplier to the world’s digital supplier and at the same time become a pioneer for climate-friendly industrial production. This is also important for our medium-sized companies, as they play an important role in industrial supply chains and will therefore be part of the funding program.”
The “Manufacturing-X” initiative of companies, industrial associations and other stakeholders has developed in the context of the Industrie 4.0 platform. The German government has selected it as an important project in its digital strategy. The participants want to enable a trusting exchange and joint use of data along industrial value chains. This will pave the way for new digital solutions and business models, for example for supply chain monitoring, smart production or closed product cycles. At the same time, the sovereignty of all participating companies in the network over their own data is to be maintained.
For this to succeed, a uniform system architecture with common and interoperable solutions is necessary, which can be co-designed by all participants according to open source rules. The funding measure builds on projects such as Catena-X for the automotive industry. What is needed now are application-oriented project ideas that are relevant to many industrial sectors. Industrial supply chains also include numerous medium-sized companies and international partners. “Manufacturing-X” is therefore to be open to medium-sized companies and international partners from the outset.
Project outlines can be submitted to the BMWK from now until December 31, 2023. Approval of suitable projects is expected to take place in some cases before the end of 2023. The duration of the projects is limited to a maximum of the end of 2026.
