Most companies offer further training on digital topics for selected employees – but only very few actually train all employees. 14 percent train all or at least almost all employees in order to impart digital skills, while two thirds (66 percent) do so for a few members of staff. A further 13 percent are currently planning or discussing such training. This is not an issue for only 5 percent, while 2 percent do not want to or cannot provide any information on this. At the same time, only one in two companies (51%) has a strategy for further training on digital topics. These are the results of a representative survey of 604 companies with 20 or more employees in Germany commissioned by the digital association Bitkom. “Digital technologies play an important role in all industries and almost all professions. The comprehensive further training of employees, for example on the use of artificial intelligence, is an investment in the future viability of their own company,” says Bitkom President Dr. Ralf Wintergerst.

4 out of 10 companies (40 percent) state that employees have no interest in further training on digital topics, just as many lack the time to train employees (40 percent) and 28 percent say there is a lack of money for this. In 4 out of 10 companies (40 percent), however, employees also lack sufficient basic digital skills, while 39 percent complain that most further training courses on digital topics do not deliver the expected results. “Further training and teaching digital skills is not an optional extra, it is a basic prerequisite for the success of the digital transformation in companies,” says Wintergerst.
